But are we sure people get the same spot every week?

I'm sorry, but I believe ...
Would love to be proven wrong though.

Can I just remind everyone that beating up hoaxers is against the Forum Rules and...
What..? it isn't..?
As you were.

Hi all,
Just to summarize for anyone who's not on GB...
iamthedoctor originally posted saying he'd met a dealer who claimed to have the film but didn't have it with him. He was going to bring it next time, however, so iamthedoctor wanted advice on what to look for, which several of us provided, including warnings about fakes, links to the relevant telesnaps, and advice to contact Paul or Steve if the dealer turned up with the film.
He then came back and said that the dealer had turned up with the film, but that he (iamthedoctor) had been unable to identify whether it was the real thing or not (AIUI he now claims that he was only shown the first few feet of the reel - not enough to get into the episode). At that stage several people advised him to get in touch with Paul and Steve, and we also took measures to draw the RT's attention to the thread.
Next thing we heard from iamthedoctor was a string of excuses - his internet had been down, he'd gone back but the guy had been acting suspicious and hadn't let him see the film. He'd now "got in touch with the BBC" (but as far as we can tell, not with the RT guys). He wasn't able to go back either this Sunday (yesterday) or this Wednesday. Understandably this set off a lot of alarm bells and he started copping a fair degree of flak.
A couple of other posters went to the fair yesterday and used the details given in an attempt to find a dealer matching the description, without success. Damningly, another poster has also now emerged who went to look for the dealer last Wednesday (when iamthedoctor claims he met the guy for the third time but he was acting suspicious), and didn't find him.
So it looks like an open-and-shut case. However on the offchance that it isn't, and events have just conspired to make iamthedoctor look like a hoaxer, another GB poster had a relative who visits that boot sale regularly, and will be passing on a description of the dealer so he can keep a look out for him over the next few weeks.
And of course, even if iamthedoctor turns out not to be a hoaxer, then the alleged dealer's behaviour so far doesn't exactly inspire confidence either...

Well, I'm not getting my hopes up too much ... but I figure either it is true or it isn't. We will see

He was opposite the burger van! That's surely enough...!!! Why do I have the feeling that we would have a better chance of getting episode 1 of The Moonbase from Ronald McDonald or the Burger King?

please be aware that i believe iamthedoctor has a form of autism (something that was talked about a while back on GB). This might explain a little of why he hasnt laid the facts out as we would expect.

Yeah that's the impression I've formed - either that or it's an extreme form of meta-trolling. Whatever the reason, he clearly winds some people up, but I've tried to keep an open mind throughout as a direct hoax would seem to be out of character for him, so far as I can judge. Nevertheless, the evidence against this seems to be stacking up rather, so either his story is accurate and coincidence is conspiring against him, or he's a deliberate hoaxer, or there's been some bad miscommunication. Whichever way it pans out (if, indeed, there's anything more to learn), I doubt there's a missing Doctor Who episode at the end of the trail...

That aside, I don't think anyone is terribly surprised by how this has all turned out so far. Personally I don't think iamthedoctor is a hoaxer... just someone who is well intentioned, but not really placed well to handle this even if it were true.

For anyone interested, Moonbase 2 and Moonbase 4 were among the copies of Doctor Who that were never technically lost.
In 1981 a redundant copy of Moonbase 4 was returned to the BBC, but I'm not sure where from. Can anyone give information on this? Was it from a private collector?

It was part of the seven films returned by Roger Stevens/Ian Levine which also contained The Abominable Snowmen 2 and Invasion of the Dinosaurs 1. The other four were also redundant.

For what it's worth, I went to the Arminghall car boot sale this morning (site of the Moonbase 1 story above, and just outside Norwich). The only 16mm films I could find for sale were 4 reels of NBC footage on American industry. They were being sold by a guy who didn't have any other 16mm films and who was there in his car and not the van described by the GB poster. I've been to the car boot sale several times this year and this is the first time that I've seen any 16mm films for sale.

Dear Paul,I feel so sorry for you.DR WHO episodes destroyed 30 years ago and poor fans trudging around car boot sales desperately trying to undo the damage that was done by the British Broadcasting Corporation. It makes me want to cry,it really does!It reminds me of trying to locate a Planet of the Apes cigarette card that I think I lost under the sofa in 1975 and have been trying to find ever since-under the same sofa!Sorry this post is a trifle scatological but this is how I'm feeling about the likelihood of recovering the Moonbase episode 1!

But the Moonbase print was much better quality than the print the BBC previously held and was used for the DVD transfer.
