I think I may be asking a question that's already been done to death, but anyhow does anybody think it's worth while trawling through various thrift/junk/secondhand/antique shops down here? I've noticed over the last few years (since DVDs have become the "standard") a lot of old large sized video cassettes (bigger than VHS) starting to accumulate in such places (even the odd home movie film reel!) perhaps from deceased estates. I don't make a pest of myself (except now possibly lol) and scan labels with a very keen eye. What should I look out for? I am a complete novice when it comes to this subject, but I suppose the more people out there looking the better hey. I have come across collectible gems lately (the Dalek tin set with The Chase/Remembrance of the Daleks in near mint condition for $10!!) in such places and I'm not entirely sure that they're aware these things go on EBay for a lot more! Any advice would be appreciated. ;D

You'd need to establish if anything missing was broadcast after home/private off air taping became available.

Well, theres always the possibility of an off-air domestic recording If Steptoe and Son was being recorded off-air in 1962...you see where I'm going with this, right?

If a particular format of tape only became available in a particular country in Year X but nothing that is missing was broadcast after that date what's the chance of a missing episode being on a tape of that format ?

Thanks guy's that thought had occurred to me, I was reading somewhere australia was still broadcasting Troughton eps in the early 70's, I'm not sure when domestic vcrs were first introduced here, I remember when I was in high school in the early 90's they were still using a big (I think it was a philips) video player in the AV room with big scotch tapes, doctor who at the time had a fairly underground following. We used to watch all sorts of stuff when sports day got washed out(no dr who) my old year advisor ( who is now the deputy principal!) is a pretty big fan of dr who, I might try and get in touch with him and see if they've still got any of those tapes, they used to get a lot of stuff difectly from the ABC (mostly educational stuff though) but you never know.

Don't forget colour versions of Mind of Evil (Part 1 has no chroma dots) or Invasion of the Dinosaurs 1 - we're waiting to see if Colour Recovery works on that.

Were any missing colour episodes ever shown down here in oz? I think some of the Frontier in Space episodes were returned from the ABC in the eighties. Australia only started broadcasting in colour in 1975, I read somewhere else in this forum that the ABC was offered colour Pertwees in 1972, did they ever receive any prior to 75? My mum remembers being scared by Mcdermotts death in Terror of the Autons when she was a girl, she thought it was quite funny when I played it for her again a few years back! She did comment that she saw it all in BW though, she just assumed it was made that way.

I know that conventional domestic tape recorders WEREN'T around then, but they were still recorded off-air with improvised, primitive equipment...Alright, Galton and Simpson had more money than the average working-class man of the period BUT what about the fellow who recorded that episode of 'The Space Pirates' off-air, with an improvised machine and audio tape...? My point is, that anything is possible - I know that Australia was a little...behind, at this point in time, but if, say, there was an Australian Millionaire who heard of such a way to record TV, and had the means available to him/her, who's to say what was recorded? Admittedly, the chances are VERY slim, but my point is, you never know...

BUT what about the fellow who recorded that episode of 'The Space Pirates' off-air, with an improvised machine and audio tape... The man in question had a Sony CV-2000, then a CV-2100 and then a colour Shibaden video recorder. They're hardly improvised machines!

I am with you there Ross. This is something I have posted here on this very forum in the past.In that there always is a chance that material may have been recorded in a domestic manner.I have seen some early AUTV recordings from a 1/2in Shibaden B&W off air TV recording from 1970!And other early examples as well from time to time in regards to off-air domestic format TV recordings in Australia.Which also assists in boosting this theory here,in that there is a chance, but just that,a chance that something ( very possibly nothing ) may be out there.I would like to think,as the rest of us do in that this is a plausible ( and quite logical ) chance and not as far-fetched as some may state.Of course we know that the tapes, and machines themselves were quite expensive in their day.Leading to fewer numbers, and the all to common practice of re-recording over the very expensive tape stock time and again. Not to say this is not the case generally at all here.Just in that,I have seen examples of very early 70's off air TV recordings from AUTV.This leads me to believe there is always a chance someone who was a fan,or wanted to record an episode or two for their children while they were out?Who knows.Never know till you look-ask in this case.In the meantime, the search continues ;D Hoping that your old year adviser ( the now deputy principal ) may have some material he kept-obtained in relation to early ABC-TV material.Fingers crossed! Cheers,Lance.

G'day (how Aussie lol) Lance, that is interesting!! Where they by any chance the Dads Army episodes? I seem to recall something was found down here in 98/99. A little of tack, but a couple of weeks ago I found some (poor quality) keep Australia Beutiful ads featuring Tom Baker on YouTube, I've been making inquiries and apparently the original tapes may exist in the national archives down here!! I'll look into this as they apparently will be all to happy to provide me with a better copy (for private viewing) I'll see what I can come up with, the person in charge of media at KAB was very helpful.

Hello Again Ross! Not quite.I was just able to find the clip again.I have been in contact with the poster of this clip.Have talked to at length in the past in regards to early open reel TV recordings.Had also found an edition of Match Of The Day on a U-Matic Tape from 1976!I was unable to assertain any direct information in relation to wether this specific edition is known to exist.Hadn't admitably thought about that until was looking for that clip again. Here is the clip sourced from an ATV0 broadcast in 1970: www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsGICh_ujJgHere is the U-Matic Match Of The Day clip.Any info on this edition would be much appreciated indeed if at all possible. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mfyscQJO-MCheers,Lance.

Wow, that was funny, looks fairly similar to some footage (quality wise) I have of AC/DC on DVD , miming to High Voltage on the king of pop awards in 1975, don't know about the football stuff though. I think archiving policies down here were not in place for a while either. I've read that the ABC are missing early installments of Countdown, The Nine Network have lost early editions of Hey Hey it's Saturday, I'm not sure but I think even early installments of Neighbors are missing too! (not a huge fan of it myself)as it was made by the 7 network before 10 picked it up, Bill Hunter passed away recently , I picked him out in The Ark where he was an extra (standing in the background arms folded with a raised eyebrow lol) thanks that has inspired me to look harder, my sister lives in Melbourne, next time I'm down there I'll have a good look round!

Hi all, still looking into that old school stuff not entirely sure if the person I spoke with on the phone actually knew what I was talking about (which is why i deleted my last post) Would definitely like to assist with a possible "official" search down here, that is if it already hasn't been done of course! I've got contacts in or close to just about every major capital in the country.I don't know if I'd be retreading old ground but I'm convinced that there would be something (not just who) floating around somewhere, Australia is a pretty big place after all. The search continues!!
