Thomas ,i know i've said this before ,but the clip i'd really like to see is the Move performing "Chinatown". They performed it on TOTP but sadly this is missing , i would like to know if they performed this song on any other show or whether they made a Promo of it anywhere.

I've never heard of ANY promo or surviving TV appearance for the wonderful 'Chinatown' Alan, sadly. The TOTP 'California Man' surfacing was a sheer delight (also the '2G's And The Pop People' appearance, albeit a butchered one, was great) plus my good-self getting a beautiful copy of 'Tonight' from 'Whitaker's World Of Music' which is still pride of place in my collection. Sits nicely beside the German TV appearance of the same track. The 70 to 72 MOVE still has some very big spaces to fill when it comes to the visuals. We live in hope Alan.....

No; actually the Moves TOTP material is generally depleted; the BBC archive for Roy wood gets better as they go into the 70s. So far as I know the following MOVE BBC material survives: TOTP night of fear (AUDIO only) truncated with no DJ links - c. Dec 1966. - The edition is dated by another cut from same show 'Hey Joe' Jimi Hendrix Experience (private recording - reel to reel format). TOTP flowers in the rain (AUDIO only) (as above) - I believe a recording of Radio 1s first broadcast and this record from 1967 also exist. BBC2 1968 - Colour film insert of MOVE featuring Carl Wayne smashing a TV set. This may be part of a LATE NIGHT LINE UP feature. TOTP 1972 - california man (July 1972 version). This exists as part of an edition recorded in B+W only regionally by Technicians. It was colourised randomly for a repeat on TOTP2 in the 90s. The cut was only discovered around that date due to being held regionally only. The Xmas show version I recall better. The main differences for that were that Jeff Lynne had a flat peaked cap on with Teddy boy frock coat as he wore for 'Roll over Beethoven'. This must have been recorded back to back as Lynne had a circular sticker saying 'I'm off to see the WIZZARD' on his electric guitar which I think was a white flying 'V'. For that version they had two bassists rolling over on the floor over double basses. They also wheeled on an ILEA TV on a stand dismounted it and smashed it. I suspect they replaced the screen with some kind of acetate sheet though not kept the glass. There is a recording of TONIGHT from similar time of CHINATOWN on a German show think DISCO 71 from ZDF. I think it's mimed but some of the German appearances were live. It would be similar I imagine to the U.K. clip in terms of the look of the band.

Pleased to have link to this Alan. DISTURBANCE I believe was a B side to either NIGHT OF FEAR or FLOWERS IN THE RAIN. In a 90s interview, Roy Wood said the record company had picked the single; but he had preferred DISTURBANCE which he felt was more representative of the stuff they wrote and played live at that time. The only appearance outside the regular hits I know of was a weekly special the Move did in 1967 for Rediffussion. So in terms of that 'B' side being seen at all we are lucky to have the Italian clip!

As we are into the topic of the Move's 1971 performances, these are also availale: The Move - Tonight (Whittaker’s World Of Music 25.5.1971) The Move - Tonight (disco 3.7.1971) The Move - Down On The Bay (Beat Club 27.11.1971) The Move - Ella James (Beat Club Unaired Nov 1971)
The first three have been released on various DVDs, the last was shown on "Vinyl" on German TV.

There is so much missing footage of the move it's criminal. Here's part of my Move website which lists when & on what they appeared. Only the asterix marked ones still exist. homepage.ntlworld.com/e.watkins/move_tv.htm

Great info Paul, i didn't realise they appeared on tv as much as they did ,what a shame so much of it is missing. Living on the south coast we had southern itv,but i wish i could remember seeing them on "As you like it"and "Where it's at"i don't remember the shows at all,as you said all this missing footage is really criminal but we live in hope that one day some of it may turn up.

This California Man clip wasn't "colourised randomly": the washed out colour is due to only part of the colour signal surviving on the regional tape, but nothing was added later. Hadn't heard about that Late Night Line-Up clip: has this ever been seen since? How do you know of it? In addition to Colour Me Pop, let's also not forget "Fire Brigade" on TOTP: surely one of the more famous Move clips. Then there's also OGWT with "Ella James" and "Words of Aaron".

Great list Paul though I would add 'Night Of Fear' + interview performed in a clothes shop in Saville Row I think. Possibly for Swedish TV in early '67. I 'ave that one..!! T.

Sorry this is due to misinfo I read at the time. I think record Collector said the original recording found was black and white so that's interesting.

Also to add there are some promos for 60s Move stuff. Colour one of FLOWERS IN THE RAIN.
For ITV the many Roy Wood editions of LIFT OFF which would have also contained CHINATOWN remain wiped and missing sadly. However they have the SUPERSONIC appearances of RW just remembered this; would be '74 on. There's an interview with him on OGWT c. 1976 as well as the '71 Move session. Believed the Disco 2 appearance ('Brontosaurus') was live.
On some of the European clips (i.e. 'Alice comes back to the farm'); the band appear to be playing partly live with a newly recorded guide track version. So these are unique versions.
