There has been an increase in the number of "Hartnell" rumors. However, they are currently very weak rumors. The only thing notable is that one particular episode was indeed taken off a video sharing website. But this isn't indicative of anything. It just means that someone in BBC Worldwide handed in the paperwork to have it taken down on copyright grounds. It happens all the time. It is odd being the only one, I'll give it that, but it's not really that interesting. The fact that it was taken down in the last couple of months may have initially lead to speculation that it had returned resulting in the first rumor that popped up early December.
Yes, one of the sources for the more recent rumors did post quite accurately the return of Web and Enemy sans Marco prior to the October reveal. But that doesn't make him reputable or correct this time around. It just means he talked with someone knowledgeable prior to the 2013 reveal: During a time where preparations with iTunes, BBC Worldwide, and news organizations would've made it impossible to keep everything tight-lipped.
I would rather steer the conversation toward the subject of Season 3 and 4 being rare for returns. Paul stated that the Airlock/UM2 returns were exciting for that reason. I'm curious to know if all serials in these two seasons have same same low odds. Are there serials that may have better odds of return over something else in those seasons?
Also, what are the odds of further finds for The Time Meddler which would benefit from a better quality copy?

We're actually in a fairly unusual situation because we're pretty sure that there is one missing episode out there-Web 3- which, apparently, has a good chance of coming home. Have we ever been in that situation before? During negotiations for several missing episodes there were brief moments of time where Paul and other Missing Episode hungers were aware of their existence, but they didn't have them "back". I'm thinking of the Faceless/Evil returns and the month or so that UM2 hadn't been handed back. Also, Ian had been aware of Dinosaurs 1 for quite some time prior to it being handed back. This time around such a situation has been made more public. Yes, we're aware that Web3 had existed. If it still does is a matter of speculation, but it doesn't change the fact that it sticks out like a sore thumb. With it being so public, I'm not sure what implications it has on other possible missing episode negotiations.

Good points.I suppose I could have said "Never in the history of searching have so many people known so much..." about one unreclaimed survivor! In theory, any breaking of radio-silence about the missingness of some episodes could tend to increase the difficulty/price of their recovery, but on the other hand, the more people who know, the better!

It seems to be an odd trend that the rarer episodes (like DMP 2) are found, whereas stories with a higher chances of being found (Marco) remain missing.

The run of episodes from The Time Meddler all the way through to Tomb of the Cybermen should in theory be the most tricky to find overseas. Of those, The Daleks Masterplan and Mission to the Unknown should be harder to uncover and serials such as The Ice Warriors, Fury from the Deep, The Invasion and The Space Pirates tricky also. In the UK, anything goes when it comes to private collectors. Paul

Marco Polo was widely sold, and locating a set of prints should in theory be easier than locating a set of The Reign of Terror or The Crusade. However, we know that there have been at least three sets of prints of The Reign of Terror knocking about since the mid 1980's, including the set that was in Cyprus, so in fact that serial is in my view the most likely to turn up. This is why I don't go to Plant Mondas and more I went crazy back in 2013 reading the threads for all the latest information 99% which did not pan out. Now I will just wait for an official announcement. I can say that back in the 1980's that it was a thrill to have a copy of Wheel in Space #3 before it was officially returned to the archives. But then again in the time before the internet the time it took for something to officially be returned to the BBC and officially published in Doctor Who Monthly and then for the magazine to make its way to the United States took a lot more time

Am I correct in assuming these new rumors have been debunked then? No truth to them or carry any weight? If so then I have completely give. Up hope on any recoveries unless the odd orphan is returned from collectors.

You seem to be saying that if it can be categorically confirmed that the rumour that was the subject of this thread is not true, then it follows that Phil will return no further episodes from his search abroad? If so, any particular reason why you'd draw the latter inference from the former?

I remain confident that Phil has recovered more DW which he'll return at a time that is right for his operation, so don't lose faith just because of rumours being debunked. Should Phil's haul include multiple Hartnell episodes, those who started or believe this latest rumour will of course claim vindication, that it has now been proven true as 2 Hartnell (plus more) have indeed been recovered ... LOL!
