I'm always wanting to know what footage survives to represent different artists in the archive and this is a list of some people I have seen very little of and seem generally to have fallen through the net. I am trying to build up a picture and discover what is missing / existing. Can you folks here help me? Feel free to add other acts who seem to be missing from the tv archives. This is my little pet project! Many thanks. Dave

During a wonderful holiday at Caister in August 1964, I remember seeing one of those early jukeboxes that had a film that played along with the record - and I clearly recall watching Screaming Lord Sutch performing "Jack The Ripper". It's the only time I ever heard the song!
A long shot, but I wonder if any of these jukebox films survive?

Some famous scopitones are the Locomation featuring Jackie Lee and Bobby Vee The Night Has a Thousand Eyes

They do! I've seen the one for Jack The Ripper and I'd guess others survive somewhere. No idea who would own the rights though. The Ripper clip was colour although I've only seen b/w versions in recent years. Part was featured in a Juke Box Heroes edition that looked at Sutch. The programme also utilised film showing his group on stage in the '60s (possibly it's from a LNLU feature?)
As far as The Action are concerned, I believe there is an extant edition of Twentieth Century Focus with a filmed item on the group. Not sure about actual performances though. I can't provide further details, I'm afraid.
Graham Bond Organisation seems to be one of the great overlooked bands in r'n'b history, mainly because there is so little existing in the archives. I've heard the Richmond gig (that was utilised by Shindig) was shot in colour although I haven't been able to confirm this fact. Let's hope so. There is one other b/w Bond clip on Youtube which I can't identify. Apart from Gonks Go Beat, that seems to be it. Pretty tragic. There is a colour clip of Air Force from Beat Club which has Bond in the line-up though.

LOL www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kbv8p1YfJbIor in a Paris resturant www.youtube.com/watch?v=fD2I2Rmgs7g&feature=relatedOn a technical note the reason the sound is out of sync is although Scopiotones used standard 16mm film , for some technical reason the sound pick up point had to spaced further away than normal 16mm film.

Thanks everyone. Please keep adding to this list as it is useful to build up a database of artists not in the archives. I'm really pleased with the response so far.
Don Fardon! I was thinking about Indian Reservation the other day and forgot to include him in the list. He appeared on Top of the Pops, of course, but long gone. Is there any footage of Chris Montez' Let's Dance from when it was originally a hit in the early sixties? He's another I haven't seen anything of. Another I have never seen is Lobo (Me and you and a dog named Boo).
Interesting there's more Colosseum footage I wasn't aware of but the solitary clip that I thought was all there was is not included in those links above! The one in question was a colour film and a clip from it was used in Jazz Britannia. Does anyone know what it is?
I'm going to put all this information together for reference so please keep adding more artists to the list if you know of any!
Thanks. Dave.

I remember seeing some of those Scopitones on a video juke box in an amusement arcade while on holiday with my parents in Clacton On Sea in either 1964 or 5. Two clips stick in my mind (as I hung around the juke box for ages to get to see them repeatedly) were one of The Hollies miming to an early hit and the Jack The Ripper film. Both were colour and at that point i'd never seen anything like it before. So it definitely left an impression on this kid!
Does anyone know how many clips were produced for video juke boxes and if they were shot specially for this purpose (or were they the usual promo films transferred to the juke box format)? How long did these machines last? The one I saw was only there for that particular holiday as it had gone by the next summer! I'd be interested to know how the machines worked and how durable the clips were as surely they must have become worn very quickly through repeated use. Do any working machines survive?
A bit o/t, I know, but possibly in a few instances these films may represent the only visual performances of some of these songs.
Come to think of it, i've just thought of another act who seems to have slipped through the archive net: Janie Jones. I can remember her performing Witches Brew on a children's TV show in the mid '60s, dressed as a witch and stirring her cauldron surrounded by kids! I've never seen a period clip of Janie from that day to this.

Yes Janie Jones was a 'colourful' character in her own right, i would have thought most producers would have been afraid to touch her? ;D
Any clips on Glenda Collins? Sue Nichols? leapy lee? jackie trent? stranger on the shore-does that programme still exist? john rowles? napoleon xiv ?
Lawrence I think the scopitone was invented by a frenchman and was obviously quite ingenious they way it worked. The Americans embraced it , and demanded more machines however Mr Scopitone was not ready for the American fickle taste , color TV came along in general use and killed it, leaving Mr Scopitone with a load of machines unpaid for which bankrupted him I think that is the way the story goes?

There are several clips of Leapy Lee, Peter, including a Beat Club for Little Arrows. There 's also at least a clip or two of Stranger On The Shore by Acker Bilk (I don't know which shows) from the sixties. Not sure about the other acts though.

Add C.C.S. to the list of acts with nothing visual remaining (as far as I know anyway).
Thanks for the info, Peter. There are a few clips of Jackie Trent from the '60s knocking around, I think. Also there's at least a b/w promo film of John Rowles for "If I Only Had Time". As regards the Stranger On The Shore programme (as opposed to the hit), I think one episode survives in the BBC archive. Andrew Martin can probably confirm this for sure though.
I can remember Sue Nicholls miming "Where Will You Be?" actually in an episode of Crossroads around the time of it being in the charts!
