Great replies everyone and keep these coming. There are a lot of big hits where there is no footage at all. I wouldn't expect in cases of novelty acts or studio creations (like some of Jonathan King's inventions) but some of you are plugging a few holes as and I hadn't heard of any Timebox or Hurricane Smith material before.
A missing artists list is slowly compiling itself. It would be great to see something of CCS, one of my most sought after acts. Don Fardon's Indian Reservation too. I live in hope. Billy Fury is another act I have hardly seen anything of, apart from his much later appearance in That'll Be The Day. There surely can't be much? Was Mr.Bloe a real person who played live? I always wondered about him.
It's as Chris says, I was thinking of acts where there is either no footage at all or none near to the time of the hits. With bands that only lasted a short while and never reformed, you don't even have the Youtube option of recent clips of hits performed by the artists much older (which isn't the same anyway).
Could the Action footage used in the mod video be from Twentieth Century Focus programme that Chris talks about, Peter?

Billy Fury is another act I have hardly seen anything of, apart from his much later appearance in That'll Be The Day. There surely can't be much? Was Mr.Bloe a real person who played live? I always wondered about him! There is a 1964 performance by Billy Fury on RSG, a 1960 one from "The Jean Carol Show" and he did make a handful of movies in the early to mid 60's. Either way, TV footage is not plentiful - no footage from the 60's of "Halfway To Paradise" being a noticeable omission. Mr Bloe I believe were a bunch of session men. "Groovin'" was one of several tunes used as backing music in links between songs on TOTP in early 1970 before it even charted. When it did hit, a band called "Mr Bloe" did perform on TOTP and the guy who played that harmonica did appear. Some photos exist with him wearing an Indian headdress!

The Birds footage mentioned above is from the dodgy Brit horror feature The Deadly Bees. I don't think anything else survives from them. The Action 'promo film' showing the group going round to singer Reggie King's house is from the Twentieth Century Focus BBC film dubbed with appropriate music. Not sure about the other Action material that appears on the web.
I've also heard the rumour of Johnny Kidd being on RSG and the footage not being available to a TV documentary a few years ago.

Some very interesting facts there Philip. Thanks. Your mention of Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart reminds me of Python Lee Jackson. Are there any appearances from the time of In A Broken Dream?
Thanks for confirming what I had guessed about Mr.Bloe that they were a fictitious band. I would love to see that scratch band Top of the Pops appearance for the song though!
I was looking at a friend of mine's Kal drama book recently and sighted Harper's West One in it and was interested as a lot of episodes seem to exist. My friend had no idea what sort of show it was and it's something that seems to be forgotten in this golden age of vintage dvd releases. It seems interesting material is contained there with the John Leyton appearance.

A 'Where the Action Is' performance of 'I'll Keep On Holding On' appears to exist as well. It's listed here at any rate: home.comcast.net/~tomkle/MUSICA.HTMHas anyone ever seen it? I don't recall it being in Lap of the Mods.

Are there any clips of Candlewick Green?
I shall have to take a look at my Guiness Book of Hit Singles later as it'll be a good place to nudge the memory for further artists!

I don't know if these count but Russ Hamilton appears in the 6-5 special film and the Tornadoes appear in the film "Just For Fun"

My friend had no idea what sort of show it was and it's something that seems to be forgotten in this golden age of vintage dvd releases. It seems interesting material is contained there with the John Leyton appearance. "Harpers West One" was I believe, a soap opera set in a department store. John Leyton was still first and foremost, an actor at that point. When he got the part and his agent Robert Stigwood discovered Leyton would be playing a visiting pop star opening the stores new record department, he pulled some strings and arranged it so that Leyton would perform his latest record - "Johnny Remember Me" - as part of the deal. Stigwood was gambling that this TV exposure might help sell and promote the disc... and it did. It's doubtful then that "Harpers West One" had any other pop appearances on the show. Other acts missing in action... How about The Caravelles? We have them on "The Wheeltappers and Shunters Club" but is there anything from before that? And how about these? Terry Dene Tommy Bruce The Artwoods The Paramounts Kippington Lodge Love Sculpture (apart from "Sabre Dance" on BC?) Mike Berry (in the 60's?) The Young Idea Adam Faith and The Roulettes (or The Roulettes on their own?) The Bo Street Runners Zoot Money's Big Roll Band Wee Willie Harris Giles Giles and Fripp Eclection Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny (in the 60's) Bern Elliott and The Fenmen Shotgun Express Karl Denver (anything again from the 60's?) Paddy, Klaus and Gibson Denny Laine (solo or with his String Band) The Swinging Blue Jeans - with Terry Sylvester Freddie Starr and The Midnighters Rory Storm and The Hurricanes The Sons Of Fred The Toggery Five Dean Ford and The Gaylords Jet Harris and Tony Meehan The Dennisons The Mighty Avengers Bill Fay Houston Wells Michael Cox There are countless names I could add, mostly more obscurer names who didn't have hits, so a lot of them probably never even did any TV at all.

I read years ago that Tomorrow made a promo film for "My White Bicycle" that ended up unused and unseen. Keith West and Steve Howe both recalled the film, but it remains missing in action. One can only wonder if it is still sitting there in the EMI archive or not. Janie Jones herself recalled her promo film in an interview, expressing a keen interest in seeing it again. It does get one wondering just what promo films were made by EMI back in those days and whether any of them still exist.

Not just 'obscure' ones How about some very big hits with no 'original' footage I could be here all week listing some of those! "Pretty Flamingo" is a very noticeable omission... in fact is there ANY Manfreds footage with Jack Bruce in the band? I've not seen any. It seems to be a hole in the Manfreds story.

Philip i didn't know Jack Bruce was in Manfred Mann do you know when this was ? It was in late 1965 after Ginger Baker had fired him from The Graham Bond Organisation. He replaced Mike Vickers and stayed until May or June 1966. He's the bassist and backing vocalist on "Pretty Flamingo" and during his time in the band he recorded mostly instrumentals that ended up on "The Soul Of Mann" album. He left at the same time as Paul Jones. So he was there for 6 months or so. Here's a pic of him with the band... www.last.fm/music/Manfred+Mann/+images/26613085
