Just over two years ago Marc Bolan (T.Rex) in an MM exclusive interview vowed he would never appear on Top of the Pops. He vowed if he ever did this he would change his name to "Zinc Alloy" and he would wear an "Asbestos" suit. Well, he's done the first half but will he fulfil the bargain?

Hi William some excellent research as ever by you regarding the dances on totp by pans people ,so it looks like you've found a couple of gold info on pop dances once again ,the Carly simon dance and pop dancing to Jimmy Hendrix ,would the reference to voodoo Chile mean it was a totp appearance William

Hi Jerry,
Thanks for your comments...
Yes, it was a Pan's People performance on Top of the Pops
so, as the readers letter was published in the Melody Maker dated the 28th November (which was a Saturday)
and given time for an old fashioned mail letter to reach the Melody Makers office, that would mean that the Pan's People "Voodoo Chile" dance routine was on Thursday the 19th November 1970 Top of the Pops.

This is a readers letter from the MAILBAG column of Melody Maker dated 4th September 1971
After seeing "Top of the Pops" it appears the BBC has missed the boat once again; this time regarding the George Harrison single "Bangla Desh" Presuming they knew Harrison's motives in releasing the record, one would imagine that any film shown with the record would have some sort of relevance to the present situation. But no, we are shown a weak "Indian Dancer" sequence. This would have been a rare opportunity for the BBC to educate within an entertainment medium, but they blew it!
J.P.BATES,13 Collingham Road. Earls Court,London S.W.5 L.P.WINNER
So I don't know if it is common knowledge that a film of an "Indian Dancer" was shown for Bangladesh?
does this film footage exist anywhere?
The reader is right in that it surely would have been better to create a montage of stock film footage or even BBC footage of the crisis in Bangladesh at the time and play the song to the footage.
Alternatively it would have been superb if George Harrison had done the song in the Top of the Pops studio! now that would have had a wow factor!

For Bangla Desh (remember at the time the country was still not independent, and commonly known as East Pakistan - Bangla Desh, rather than Bangladesh, is correct when referring to the single and the nation until late 1971....), no official promo single was issued and Harrison did not perform the song on any TV shows or similar. The BBC film used for Bangla Desh on TOTP still exists in the BBC library:- ""Promo film of George HARRISON's `Bangla Desh'LLV5731N 19 Aug 1971"".

Hi Ray, Thanks for this information (How do you check the BBC library?) At the moment, you can't. It used to have a way of seeing information at Getty Images but you can no longer do that.

Review of the 02/02/67 Top of the Pops in the Edinburgh Evening News and Dispatch...
Top of the Pops has never shown more imaginative, more way out film than the piece they used to illustrate "I'm A Man." Excellent, but distracting from The Spencer Davis Group's music.
Incidentally, I too, would want a pair of those glasses Rolling Stone Keith Richards wore if I had Brian Jones sitting on my piano.
