Edinburgh Evening News TV critic's review of TOTP 19/4/73 (although on another website it mentioned no TOTP was transmitted that night?) Pan's People were not at their best dancing to Carly Simons' (You're So Vain) Jimmy Savile in half open dressing gown, half revealing a bare torso and the blue trunks he wears for wrestling. David Bowie given the "new release" spot. (film shown was of a sporty looking car with a video tape screen in the front, much to the chagrin of the road safety people I imagine.) Odd! ""19-4-73: No show due to a BBC strike >> had this edition been recorded, the host would have been Jimmy Savile OBE. "" Even stranger, because by then, Carly Simon had released her follow-up! However, Drive-In Saturday was released as a single 06/04/73, so that ties in.

Actually Ray, the Bowie as a 'new release spot' doesn't tally either for that week - by then Drive-In Saturday was at #8 in 'The Hit Parade'.. and by then was Bowie really a big as Lennon was for the 5/2/70 show anyway to warrant a make-shift film for a new release? The one time Jimmy hosted a show featuring Pan's People dancing to Carly Simon, and a David Bowie track, was the first show of 1973 - the Bowie there being the legendary Jean Genie live performance.

I do remember that "sporty car with the video screen" film, though.

I'm not so sure I've got the TOTP review date of Pan's People/Carly Simon...David Bowie film correct?
the reason being I've looked at the calendar for 1973 and the date I put down in my post was the 19th April 1973...which was a Thursday!
so as the Edinburgh Evening News TV critic was reviewing the "previous" nights TV that would mean that he was reviewing Wednesday night's TV !!! and as we all know TOTP was always on a Thursday!
So I think what I'll need to do is go back to the library next week and double check!
cheers William

Do you remember a Scotland based quiz that was also networked on ITV for a while called Now You See it?: www.ukgameshows.com/ukgs/Now_You_See_ItDo STV's archives fare well compared with Thames, LWT, Granada and Yorkshire? This was the UK version of a show which might survive quite well in the archives, as it was filmed during the 1980s.

You'd be very welcome to create your own thread if you wish, or alternatively, going through the first 20 pages of this forum section, I came across this link as a general "Top of the Pops" topic which could be posted in for favourite performances : missingepisodes.proboards.com/thread/9065/top-popsHI,I am new to posting messages but want to know if there is a thread to post your fave totp performances from the all the years it was on tv and not just missing performances etc..Ta..

"" Hi, I'm just back from the library and I can confirm that TOTP must have been shown on the 19/04/73 as I double checked the Edinburgh Evening News TV critic's review which was in that newspaper on the 20/04/73as I've said previously Pan's People danced to Carly Simon, also on the show were Gary Glitter,Argent,Dawn, and Hot Chocolate and the presenter was Jimmy Savile.

The BBC's Genome site does indicate it was on Thursday 19 April, at 18.45, although oddly the very next week it was on Friday and it stayed there until mid-September.

Most TOTP cancelled due to strike action were scheduled in the RT - and are thus nearly all on Genome. Gives us valuable info on who was due to host the shows that never were - even the protracted Summer 74 & Summer 80 strikes. For instance, 5-6-80 was due to be Simon Bates hosting, 12-6-80 Jimmy Savile; the first show of September 73 Kenny Everett; 5-4-84 was due to be a Peel/Jensen show etc
The best answer to this will come from any ex-BBC staff who worked the shows and kept diaries

I have a recollection of a presenter saying they'd received so many favourable responses to a Pans People routine they were going to do it again. I'm fairly sure it was a Carly Simon song...

Most TOTP cancelled due to strike action were scheduled in the RT - and are thus nearly all on Genome. They do ask for information about scheduled shows that weren't broadcast, if you have it. I know a few of the episodes shown on BBC Four were originally shown on Fridays but there was usually a reason for that. Was there some particular reason for the move after Easter 73?
