Thanks John for your reply ,yes I remember seeing the Dave berry clip you are on about but it definitely wasn't ant totp dancing ladies ,I seem to think it came from an American show, did you mean that you remember pans people dancing to armed and extremely dangerous or that you remember the first choice performance on totp, many thanks. I'm straining my brain to recall what I recall of the 64 - 65 period. As I said 'RSG' seemed the mainstay in our house but my older sister seemed to think we watched a mixture of both shows. Most of the records that were out 64 - 65 'downtown', 'king of the road', 'I remember you' etc seem to be radio memories. I do have a vague one of 'Anyone who had a heart' Cilla Black; though. This may or may not be TOTP. Cilla had the sort of shaped flick hair do visible in some early existing material and so far as I recall a typical wide necked shoulderless dress. This was pre nose op, in the earlier days Cilla's nose seemed longer and she had a beauty spot also. The op was publicised later as she was unhappy with the shape of her nose; though her features look fine to me on the '64 clips. In the remembered clip no audience is seen. I have vague memory of moving projected light shapes to the left side as the camera does a side shot. The background in this memory is grey and seems to be VT. Most of the show had shots so her body was in view but at a fair distance with the background visible. Not as wide shots as 'London Palladium' though. The memories are not from the Palladium show as there were no background curtains. There's another memory which seems to conflict where the background is dark like dimmed studio lights. Not much detail I can confirm, except that these were almost certainly before her 1968 show. Cilla's cover of 'Anyone who had a heart' was a striking record at the time and the memories seem to be from when it was new.

Linda sang the song twice on TOTP, once (miming) acoustic, the other electric. Her vocals were live, though and she did play guitar on the record (people occasionally forget she wrote the song, you know.). Both performances were wiped by the BBC, but the second exists in the PVL collection. She mimed to the electric, rather than the acoustic the second time, at the suggestion of her future husband Jim Cregan, who suggested it was 'a bit more rock'n'roll'. Interested to hear about the surviving clip. What's the PVL collection? The Private Video Library. The collectors term for a large number of tapes that were recorded by the late Ken Holmes domestically; they were sold on in the last few years. Copies of some of them (in b/w and colour, depending on the performances) have circulated on the collectors' circuit and on youtube, but not all of them. All have been transferred from tape to digital.

Oh, thanks for that.
All that seems to be on youtube at the moment is various audio versions of the song unfortunately.

Much of it seemd to be a form of easy listening Mums and Dads would approve of. I recall my Mum liking the Seekers. 'I'll never find another you' is the one that springs to mind. The Kingston Trio had a hit with 'Where have all the flowers gone' similar period. There was a Beatles number in the top ten but a cover by the Overlanders of 'Michelle'. These are all records that stick out in my mind from the period late 65 - early 1966. Also 'keep on running' Spencer Davis group. But am not sure I recall that better from its use in Radio 1s 'story of pop' in 1973. I don't really have specific memories of TOTP performances for those songs but I believe all are represented by some kind of promo in existance.

All the bits here - except Glitter exist somewhere; the Slade, Jagger and Osmonds excerpts exist at the Beeb, the other stuff mentioned exists as part of the PVL. PLease note, the whole of the 500th edition is not known to exist.

I have a clear recollection of Top Of The Pops cutting away to Cilla Black's 21st birthday bash somewhere. They went over live to speak to her at her party. Anyone else remember this? It may even have been the week she hit the top spot with "Anyone Who Had A Heart". Anyone know her birthday? The NME chart puts the disc at the top between 22 February and 14 March 1964.

Thanks, Ray. Another memory that was slightly askew.... I always thought it was in connection with "Anyone Who Had A Heart". There you go....
I see in my trustee NME book of charts (so glad I bought that book, as I don't think it's easily available now) that "You're My World" had just hit the top that same week as her birthday, so at least part of my brain is still in fairly good working order!
Cheers.

Hi Colin, The NME mentions that Brian Epstein threw a party for Cilla's 21st birthday in his London flat. The other guests included John Lennon,George Harrison,Gerry and The Pacemakers,The Fourmost and Sounds Incorporated. Then afterwards they went to see Cilla perform at The London Palladium. Earlier in the day Cilla lunched with George Harrison,Brian Epstein,George Martin and Dick James.

Thanks for that info, William.
Oh, if only there was some way to recapture those programmes from the airwaves....
Colin.

I don't know if this is common knowledge?
but Lynda Carter (former Miss America and Miss World) was a guest on Top of the Pops on the 7th December 1972
she mentioned that she sings too and that we'd see her on "Up Sunday"

Basil Fawlty lives!... This article from The Edinburgh Evening News mentions Status Quo being refused admission to an Ellersley House Hotel in Edinburgh on Thursday the 27th September 1973 (after recording a spot for that night's Top of the Pops)

Edinburgh Evening News TV critic's review of TOTP 19/4/73 (although on another website it mentioned no TOTP was transmitted that night?)
Pan's People were not at their best dancing to Carly Simons' (You're So Vain) Jimmy Savile in half open dressing gown, half revealing a bare torso and the blue trunks he wears for wrestling.
David Bowie given the "new release" spot. (film shown was of a sporty looking car with a video tape screen in the front, much to the chagrin of the road safety people I imagine.)

""19-4-73: No show due to a BBC strike >> had this edition been recorded, the host would have been Jimmy Savile OBE. ""
