[I'm sure I've read somewhere that it was a joke... Is this the same sort of joke that Jon Preddle played by planting "dodgy" information in his website just to catch people out? What a way to treat the fans, playing jokes on them over a touchy subject like this! Whatever the outcome of all of this, a few of the so called "uberfans" need to remember that if us mere "plebs" didn't buy the dvd range then they would have to find other ways of showing their superiority over us all.

Not a very funny joke though, considering how passionate people are about the recovery of lost TV.

Remember the rules of tabloid journalism. 1) never let the truth get in the way of a good story 2) the answer to any headline put as a question is generally "No" to be honest it doesn't actually say anything. This on the other hand is far more irresponsible www.kasterborous.com/2013/12/weve-learned-bfi-tonight/Especially the last line (about marco polo 5) which is now also being reported on DWA twitter. I'm sure I've read somewhere that it was a joke... It's largely rubbish. The 10,000 film cans is unsubstantiated. Yes, Steptoe, Dad's Army, etc were mentioned - but as examples of what those being interviewed would like to see recovered. wrt Marco Polo, Ian Levine mentioned that as being something he'd like back - had a Radio Times cover, hundreds (?) of extras....

Bad form IMO

Not a very funny joke though, considering how passionate people are about the recovery of lost TV. Sometimes the balloon needs pricking. Look elsewhere and you'll find that the main concern of some when the Jimmy Savile business blew up was that BBC4 wouldn't be showing any old editions of TOTP that featured him. That lowlife mentally and physically scarred people for life - put things in perspective.

To be fair, I think I am keeping some perspective. It was a documentary about missing TV, for the benefit of missing TV enthusiasts. You wouldn't expect to see a documentary on lost silent films with a can of London After Midnight in the shot, just to wind the viewers up, would you?

There were several things in the documentary that I saw as potential wind ups.

DWA on MBW ( doctorwhoarchive.com/2013/12/21/report-on-tonights-missing-believed-wiped/) with a quote from Dick Fiddy from his facebook page “To qualify – that statement was from the MBW documentary and needed further elaboration. The full context is that the paper trail (ie the original sales documents) plus the number of separate broadcasters, warehouses, facility houses on the African continent that are being checked could potentially (and very probably) yield that sort of number. As to how many of those titles would be extant and of any use (ie not defunct) is debatable as would be how many are actually missing. In a nutshell what I was indicating was that there is s strong possibility that it’s a huge number of titles that are potentially out here and which Phil Morris is our best hope when it comes to retrieval.”
