There was one. But it was an already-existing episode of the Space Pirates (part two), and it had degraded to the point where it was unrecoverable anyway. I think it was more than just degradation of the tape. I think it was something to do with tracking as those old tape machines had fixed heads so generally a tape could only be played on the machine it was recorded on. Being and episode that already existed they didn't bother modifying another machine so it could be played.

I presume that the old chestnut about William Hartnell having a 16mm print of The Feast of Stephen run off specially for his own use at home has been completely debunked? Yes, completely. It was footage from Dalek Invasion, IIRC.

Hadn't the bloke actually cut down-or along-old computer tapes to record on? I believe that he didn't buy the proper type of tape due to cost and instead used any bit of tape he could get hold of and cut it to the right size.

Indeed - you have to get past the unlikely event of it being recorded in the first place, then the even more unlikely event of it not being recorded over, then the tape still existing, and then of course the tape being playable. So whilst it's technically possible, I'd be hugely surprised if it ever happens. ....we all should just be thankful that somebody pointed a still camera at it and took a couple of homemade telesnaps.....at least we have an image of what appears to be the Hartnell toast to camera ..........does make ya wonder tho if somebody ,somewhere ,might have pointed there new christmas present 8mm film camera at their TV screen that day

It was footage from Dalek Invasion, IIRC. I can remember reading the original article at the time , in either DWM or DWB , which (allowing for memory cheating )was (i think ) an interview with Camfield , implying that he himself thought the Xmas ep was so bad that he deliberatly removed it himself from the studio and gave it to Hartnell. some of which may just have been Camfield spinning a good yarn (especially as it is likley to have only existed as a Tape ,and not a 16mm film print ) but it would seem odd that Camfield would give Hartnell Dalek Invasion material instead (tho not impossible). alternitivly maybe Camfield did take the tape , but didnt give it to Hartnell, (or gave it to somebody else involved in ep 7 ) or he didnt take it at all ! Anybody else remember the article?. or have a copy of it handy? im pretty sure that it was the source of the Rumour ?
