In 1968, the Goons did a one-off show for Thames, which featured them re-doing their "The Tale Of Men's Shirts" episode. It starred the Goons and John Cleese.
It flopped, but does it exist? (Probably not, but I'd like to know nonetheless).

Yes it does exist. Have seen a clip years ago on Telly Addicts with Cleese holding the script;looks like it was on 16mm coulor. Probably get released by Network as they now have their hands on everything these days. It's listed in the Spike Milligan section of Radio Times Guide to TV Comedy on page 514 and inculdes synopsis and cast etc.

It does exist, then? Incredible! Good to hear that.

It exists and was originally made on colour 16mm, not sure if the original print survives though I would imagine so.
The 1972 BBC show was coversly made on VT.

Lewinsohn (I don't have the book, the entries of the RT Guide to Comedy is online on the BBC site) says it was b/w.

Working on a LWT show some years back called "The Trouble with the 50s", I used a clip of a Goon Show recording which was B&W, but looked about 1968. I can't remember the which script it was, but I saw no sign of John Cleese in the print I viewed. The tele-recording was labelled as "Harry Secombe Show" and I assumed it was a recording that was spliced into that series at some stage. Is this the same one or another - anyone any ideas? I do remember that the day after transmission, someone from the Goon Show Appreciation Society phoned asking about it as it had never been seen before...

I think The Harry Secombe Show was a BBC variety show.

The black and white clip is more likely from 'Secombe And Friends' and was only used in clip form as it was being watched by Secombe and Ray Ellington, in a reminiscence-type feature. I've got the soundtracks for both shows, but for the life of me I can't remember the name of the Goon show recreated for 'Secombe And Friends'.

from Roger Wilmut's GOON SHOW COMPANION:
SECOMBE AND FRIENDS 16-10-66 Part of this programme was the result of an attempt by AR to stage a Goon Show. A set simulating a BBC radio studio was constructed, and the cast performed at a microphone in the manner of a radio broadcast, in front of an invited audience. However the complete show was considered too uninteresting visually, and in SECOMBE AND FRIENDS Secombe and Ellington reminisced and introduced excerpts from the vt, only about half of which was seen by the viewers. THE GOON SHOW chosen was THE WHISTLING SPY ENIGMA; the duration of this part of the programme (minus adverts) was 17'15".
TALES OF MEN'S SHIRTS lasted 23'20" (8-8-68)

Hmmmm - that sounds about right. My only problem is that I know I got that show from ITC, therefore more likely to be an ATV show, than an A-R one... strange things happened though. Might have ended up at ITC/ATV as it was ATV that tele-recorded it etc.

It turned up a couple of year's ago and was shown at the NFT's Missing Believed Wiped event in November. At least that's what I seem to remember. I'm afraid I wasn't concentrating when it was shown (sorry but I just don't get the Goons).

(Probably not, but I'd like to know nonetheless). It definitely exists in full, I have a third or fourth gen copy on VHS, taken from a particularly manky 16mm print. I do hope it is not the original that's in the state I've seen it in. (Scratches, breaks, dirt etc)

The BFI showed this at missing believed wiped and I am surprised no-one else has had the sagacity to mention this. The Mary Millington sections have been removed.

The Thames edition is held by The Goon Show Preservation Society somewhere (I do remember watching it, but am not sure if the Members Video Library had it, or whether it was kept elsewhere), but I do know that the script for the Goon Show section of a Secombe special was bought at auction a couple of years ago to add to the George Brown Collection (held in trust by the GSPS).
