It's not a case of agreeing or disagreeing - we all know that waiting for favourite series to be released can sometimes be the most frustrating thing on Earth. Those are the forum rules though (which are posted prominently for all to see) and need to be observed when posting here. That's what people agree to when registering, regardless of personal views.

Reprimand accepted! However, perhaps a you or a contributor to this site can shed some light on the following. I've been asking around and a number of people believe that copyright on TV programmes expires after 50 years and thereafter the material goes into the public domain. If this is true then the DVDs that are currently on offer on Ebay are perfectly legal as they were all broadcast before July 1964.

Thanks for taking it so well,Bernard. I can understand your frustration with the BBC.People have lived and died waiting for the material to be released!

Yes, agreed. It's nothing personal.
Copyright is a grey area and I think it will vary from instance to instance. However, if there had been a blanket freeing up after 50 years, a lot more stuff would legally be out there by now. A lot of sites will claim that X is free of copyright to try and cover their backs. I wouldn't nessesarily take it as fact though!
This is just a generalistion though and others will know more about the specifics of copyright.

Any word on a third collection of Z-Cars, does anyone know? I was expecting one, but Acorn reducing the two extant box sets to a combined £7.99 is a bit worrying...

Well Acorn answered my question quickly at least... Dear Mr Douglas Thank you for your email. Unfortunately there are no plans at the moment to release further series of Z-Cars or Dixon of Dock Green. Kind regards Sandra. Stuart

Well I guess we could all ask a similar question although it might seem a bit suspicious if Acorn get numerous Z Cars inquiries at the same time. Thanks for the tip about the box sets Stuart, I had been holding off buying these as (whisper it) I had pirate copies from some time back. Order now placed!

I wrote last month and received the same reply. Frustrating! Some (very) slight compensation. The new Acorn catalogue arrived this morning and they're releasing Series 2 of Softly Softly Task Force on 22nd September. It's a 7 DVD set, so there should be at least 20 episodes. I don't know about the rest of you but it seems strange to me that Task Force would attract better sales than Z Cars. It also raises the question: why didn't they issue a similar sized collection for Z Cars Series 2? Of course, we don't know what they're being charged for the licence so that may have something to do with it.

A new episode has been uploaded to YouTube - 'Waste' from 1974, featuring Lewis Collins. It has been posted by the Lewis Collins fan club. Sound and picture quality are good.

No such thing as 'public domain' in the UK on film/video material, this is in the USA where if they don't pay a renewal fee after fifty years then it belongs to no one until the fee is paid..obviously if the distributor is defunct and every one associated with the film is dead then it does not get paid..however there is nothing to stop anyone paying it and taking over control. ....However in the UK it is different for audio discs which at one time the copyright could expire after 50 years, this may have changed in the past decade?.. as you may recall a few years ago Sir Cliff Richard was getting worried about his early discs and kept lending his tropical island retreat to Tony Blair and family for holidays LOL. Something like that anyway....

Another previously unissued episode has appeared on YouTube - Pieces, from 1973, guest starring Paul Darrow (Blake's 7). I had hoped that the new Britbox service might have given us some episodes, but no luck. Typical - mostly Britbox only provides what's already being rewpeated ad infinitum on Alibi, Drama and ITV3.

Yep Britbox is a bag of the proverbial/ Old tat we've seen and paid for umpteen times. Meanwhile perfectlydecent shows lie in the archive unwatched. Thankfully I get my archive box every night via tivo and Virgin. Been watching tons of 70's footie. Bliss!

Two more on YouTube: Distance and Ritual. These are the first two of the trilogy in which Joe Skinner is shot dead. Unfortunately there's no sign of Legacy, the final epiosde of the three. I'm chuffed to get these however as I missed them first time round through being on late shift.

Christmas really has come early this year! After Pieces, Distance and Ritual there's yet another new episode on YouTube. It's one called 'Guns' and was first broadcast in January 1976. I don't know who our benefactor(s) is or are, but if they read this many many thanks. If you have more, please keep them coming.
