Mentioned in another thread as not having been seen since it's original broadcast, here a short clip of what is said to be this TOTP Performance. www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ox8bMvQ1VQ

STERLING STUFF! AMAZING POST! Thank you so very much for posting this Peter. I cannot be certain here, but I believe this is the same clip which was mentioned. This is deffinitely from TOTP, as seen from the backdrop layout seen here. This looked to have been sourced from a fan DVD would be my best guess here. Hoping further information may be learned here in regards.
If anyone has any further details on this one please let the rest of us know here. If I am recalling correctly I believe this is kept on its original 2in Quad VT Insert?
Cheers, Lance.

Hi Lance
This is the clip that appeared on the 25th Anniversary edition of TOTP and it is from TOTP's itself.
I think it's from the same edition from 1965 that features The Byrds & The Seekers clips rescued by Bob Pratt.
Sadly this is all that has been shown of the performance to date since its original broadcast.
Let's hope Ray can persuade his contacts to screen it in full at some point in the near future.

The BBC know about it, and the factit has not been shown since broadcast. It exists in full at the Beeb - and is the earliest 'Bob Pratt' tape. This was confirmed yesterday. I do a lot of work that people on the Forum don't know about, but nowhere near as much as I'd like to!

The only other conclusion I can come to then is that there might be some sort of clearance issue with this song?

More than likely just bad researching though. No more than the surface was ever scratched for TOTP2 when it came to digging and finding out what the BBC themselves had to show. I do think they should get the fans to do the researching as it would turn up far more interesting material.

I would LOVE to actually sit down with my contact at the BBC and see if he could plan a programme out of 'rarely transmitted' material. I may put it to him in the next few days? What do the Forum members think - I mean it can't do any harm, can it?

Superb idea Ray.
Taking Laurence up on his previous post he does have a point about poor research.
Going back to The Shadows again on "Sounds of the Sixties" they showed The Shads performing "FBI" from Crackerjack however there is also a clip of The Shads performing "The Frightened City" from the same edition of Crackerjack that was never shown.
The clip of this performance can be found on Youtube.
Doesn't make any sense to me.

I think - seriously - you should moot the idea of either a special or a series around the "recovered" concept. Are they coming round to using stuff they should have used years ago such as The Kinks & Hendrix clips? They could collect orphan clips together in a similar vein to the "Big Hits" compilations (but, please, no chopping!) or even make a show using narration and/or a knowledgable host to present, by way of explanation of picture quality etc, the complete/near complete shows recovered from domestic recordings in recent times. I'm sure Lulu would like to present 6/3/69 to the nation given her apparent contract with the BBC to appear on every show they make? Ditto David Hamilton and the four shows he preserved, not just "TOTP repeats" but an interesting slant on things too. I'm sure this would attract as much (self) publicity in the same way The Jean Genie did, and thus more potential recoveries - and, for what it's worth, fairly cheap to produce. No matter what the critics might say, this kind of concept would be ideal for BBC4 as an "culture & music" channel given the success of the TOTP repeats.

Sounds like a great idea Ray, as you and some others on here are probably more knowledgeable about the TOTP archive than the Beeb is! There so much stuff that hardly ever/never gets shown. If your Beeb contact is receptive to suggestions it could result in much improved shows that are interesting to any casual fan of 60s/70s music, not just the Happy Few on here.
Surely that newly found 1973 edition with Roxy Music and Mud would be worth a showcase on BBC4?

Well, I have done already. I have sent a few lists over that way (the last two days ago), and I know that certain people at the Beeb are looking into things.
It might even be an idea to do a 'rare performances' (by year) from the BBC archive. I'd like to point out, I would prefer full shows, and/or clips unseen since broadcast, but I AM NOT THE DRIVER, and I have to be ultimately as pragmatic as possible. I will get something, anything shown this year if it f###ing well kills me. Trust me. I will do my best, health and time allowing.

The idea I mooted was a 'TOTP - rare and discovered' Special.

I think that the current budget restrictions in place at the Beeb actually go in our favour as the race is on to attract viewers without racking up production costs - something they have found the TOTP re-runs deliver. The interest in seeing archive 60s, 70s & 80s footage extends far beyond us 'anoraks' thankfully, and could also serve as an advert for an 'online archive' in the future. I think it's worth suggesting they repeat the whole "Rock & Roll Years" series in full too, that show has never been bettered in managing to distill a year in news & music in under 30 minutes without ever feeling insubstantial

RNRY was very good, and works better than a lot of 'birthday' and compilation DVDs of the years in the past - particularly as the Beeb have access to lots of great footage post-WW2.
I'll ask my contact for a meeting. Could go anyway. Bear in mind all the Stealer's Wheel and Bowie work was done either on the phone or (mainly) by e-mail. For example, I haven't even met John Henshall yet, and I am about as social an animal as one can get!

Maybe you should pitch for a job on BBC4 Ray? I'd love to have the job of commissioning and scheduling!
