The chances of me getting a job in the industry is unfortunately low. I'd love one, of course. But in these days of BBC streamlining and so forth, I can't see them taking on an anorak like me who - let's face it - is a pain in the bottom to many people in the Archive world. Not that anyone is rude to me, they are all professional and I'm sure, by and large, pleasant people. But it would be like offering Swampy a peerage - it's not going to happen!
Nonetheless - buoyed by my successes - I will plug on. Trust me, any clip unseen since broadcast being aired is a triumph for me. And if Chris Evans wants to donate one day of his earnings to a particular department of the BBC, we can get some Wurzels footage recovered. Seriously, and still have the spare change for cider for everyone (feel free to contact Chris Evans, or Anne Robinson or Graham Norton and mention this, a days wages paid to them would cover it, trust me.)

I would LOVE to actually sit down with my contact at the BBC and see if he could plan a programme out of 'rarely transmitted' material. Yes, it doesn't take very much effort to locate interesting material. When I was researching myself at BBC HQ a few years ago for the TOTP website, a simple glance at the internal database turned up stuff within a few clicks of the mouse. Sure, you need to know where to look and what you're looking for but that reinforces my point that fans would make a better job of the researching for programmes like TOTP2 as they know what's what. To music fans like us, that's a kind of dream job!

I really liked The Rock & Roll Years, I've still got a few (almost all of 1958-72) on video from the 1990 repeats, along with most of the last batch covering 1981-9.

Ray,
Likewise, I think the " Rare- TOTP Special " To be a fantastic idea. Something which I would dearly love to see come to fruition. As am hoping with the large suggestion of clips myself, and many others had posted in regards for material which would make for an excellent inclusion. Of course we all understand the various rights, time, scheduling, etc. items which come into play in these sort of matters. I am just hoping those in power at the BBC do not throw away the voices of their viewing demographic. Time will tell. Thanks again to all involved in further promoting this and other clips rebroadcast!!
Cheers, Lance.

This thread is very positive. The general consensus suggests a large fanbase out there, many more passive than others, but all knowledgeable and appreciative. Music fans come from all walks of life. They do not fit neatly into a 'demograph'.
If the correct etiquette is used by the fans, then the BBC should find it beneficial to look into their requests sympathetically. Such a lot of radio & TV playlisting revolves around songs that have been revived in movies/TV, and those listed as top 10 hits in the British Hit Singles book. In short, the programmers go for the obvious choices.
Ray, if you are in discussion with the BBC then the positive discussions on this forum could be emphasised to gain a win-win situation. I know from the interest created by the TOTP re-runs among (non-media) friends and work colleagues that if different footage was shown it would be popular. It could be a commercial, as well as a cultural, success.

Here's a TV appearance of The Shadows performing their other vocal single from '65 - Mary Anne. Don't know where it's from but it is said to be rare. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnwAXAmiQ3k

Never seen that one before! A proper DVD retrospective and in-depth documentary on The Shadows are both long overdue.

I'm hopeful - I think the combination of factors of cheap-to-produce (research - everyone uses the internet) and us here plus the 'hands-on' people like Ray are almost doing the job the BBC pay people to fail at for TOTP2. The facts are there for all to see - there are TOTP appearances by stellar artists like Jimi Hendrix, The Kinks, Stevie Wonder, Bee Gees & T.Rex that the BBC haven't repeated but have every right to! Throw into the mix other the fact that stuff like the Summer 67 recoveries, with some work on the soundtrack, do have enough "public interest" to be shown within the confines of a TOTP and/or Lost-and -Found "rockumentary" whether they have picture interference or not! It is not essential that 'picture quality' be perfect all the time as most viewers know this stuff is 40/50 years old and 'believed wiped' If - as appears to have happened - we have enthusiasm from BBC Producers (tick) who are working with independent researchers/experts (tick) and it is clear there is enough 'public interest' to all of this stuff (tick) then things stand a good chance of happening. The interest in music footage of the 60s & 70s extends way beyond dedicated 'geeks' like us - I know of people as young as 18 who would appreciate what I have seen at the last 2 KAL music events, and the viewing figures for the oft-woeful 1976 repeats clearly tell us (and the Beeb) that this under-mined field is not so much 'cult' as a clear ratings winner

I did think of compiling a list of songs that seem to be overlooked, even ones my major artists, with a short write-up of my reasons for including them.
TV Cream did something similar with a Top 100 B-Sides a few years ago, it's not currently on the site, but I made a text copy of it.

There was a thread a while ago that tried to itemise songs / hits represented / not represented visually in the archives by various acts. It might be useful to resurrect this now and add to it.

I think the 60s is long-ago enough for viewers to make allowances for sound and vision quality.
I didn't turn off the Al Bowley,Gracie Fields,Vera Lynn,George Formby documentaries because the historical footage was in b&w and mono!

As much as I like to lend my support to get the bbc to show all the rare and rarely seen 1960s pop performances that often exist in foreign archives quite frankly I don't mind if it's from TOTP, Blue Peter or any other variety show from the 60's - just show it!

Ray, did you ever get involved in looking for the Xmas 72 TOTP "Rocket Man" clip as used on the 'Madman Across The Water' documentary. Apparantly existing via a BBC show called "Thanks For The Frying Pan" broadcast on 11/5/74, it's not known how much of the TOTP clip exists as it's apparently intersped with NASA footage
