I was fortunate enough to see the 6/3/69 edition at the KAL event two years ago and for a domestic recording I thought it was in excellent condition. If they gave a copy of this edition to the BBC's restoration team I am sure they could clean it up to make it worthy of being broadcasted. Yes, I was there too, Richard. It looked pretty good for a domestic recording but it wouldn't be possible to restore it to broadcast quality as the detail just isn't there. It could, of course, be improved upon and made to look better than it is currently but there are limits. Having said that, I don't see why in special instances (e.g. a rare clip that is the only known copy) domestic recordings shouldn't be acceptable to be screened - if the audience are aware that it's that or nothing!

Whats the history with the Walker Brothers clip is this a recent recovery? Yes, fairly recent. See the "Raiders Recoveries / TV Discoveries" past recoveries thread that's pinned to the top of the general TV page where it's mentioned. It stays there for everyone's reference to what has been turned up in the last 3 or 4 years.

We've been telling the BBC ever since Steve Wright took over from Johnnie Walker on TOTP2 to get rid of the voiceovers and stupid captions. The fact they're STILL present - though with Radcliffe in place of Wright - shows how much the BBC really care. Great they did for once unearth something genuinely rare with the Walker Brothers clip, but...

Whilst I initially quite liked Johnnie Walkers v/o's when TOTP2 first started back in 1994, to me, it is the sort of show that just DOESN'T need a 'presenter' waffling a load of crap over each intro! Nor does it need those awful captions - but- I can see how maybe (sometimes!) these are more relevant than a v/o.
Just look at the 'Big Hits' 64-76 compilation for example - it worked perfectly (albeit those captions!) but it went to prove just how unnecessary a presenter is.
Perhaps if they did away with Radcliffe and gave his (no doubt) over in-flated salary to some decent BBC researchers we just might have really got some "rare" clips!!!!

I enjoyed seeing the Walker Brothers clip for the first time , and although i hate all the captions and the BBC logo, i have to admit i didn't realise that Don Partridge was no longer with us , so on this occasion it turned out to be some useful imformation i never knew about.

Great to see the Walker Brothers on last nights episode, anything from 1966 is as rare as rocking horse sh*t. How come the song was on TOTP two weeks running if it wasn't number 1? And was the performance not from July 1966 which means the TOTP caption was incorrect, that's unusual. Where was this performance found it's in very good condition. 14-7-66: Presenter: Pete Murray (Wiped)

I understand that the Walkers clip was found as an insert, does anyone know from which show that it was an insert from?

I would like to say the Walker Brothers was located by someone in a German archive. That's all I can say at the moment. I did mention this clip to the Beeb on an email I sent on 03/02/2011. I DID NOT find it, or have anything to do with the recovery of it. But I did inform TOTP the the clip was around, definitely. So....it DOES work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I noticed that there was a shot of the TOTP audience near the end of "Get Off Of My Cloud" that was cut out of the "Sounds of the Sixties" when it was broadcast in 1991. But I also noticed the quality of the recording seems to have deteriorated in the intervening years. Wonder why?
Also, I noticed during "Ferry Cross The Mersey" that a couple of people in the audience were the same as those shown in audience shots during the Righteous Brothers clip in that 1964-76 show shown recently. So hopefully several clips remain in existence from that show (21 Jan 1965, I believe).
Colin.

""The Walker Brothers clip was aired at the time on the October 22, 1966 edition of German TV's monthly pop show, Beat Club (prog no.13). The BBC were first tipped off about it in 1996 (by way of fax) and then again in July 2001 when a VHS copy of it was taken into the TOTP2 editing studio and showed it to the show's then producer, Chris Cowey. The master of this Beat Club episode was, at one point, thought to be lost but was discovered in their vaults in early 2009"" The BBC were reminded about this clip 03/02/2012, by way of email. (IN ADDITION TO THE SHADOWS, and a number of other clips....)

Most of that show does survive: 21-1-65: Presenter: Jimmy Savile (Wiped)(21) BRIAN POOLE & THE TREMELOES – Three Bells *(9) MANFRED MANN – Come Tomorrow * (5) SOUNDS ORCHESTRAL – Cast Your Fate To The Wind (8) CILLA BLACK – You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’(16) DEL SHANNON – Keep Searchin’ (We’ll Follow The Sun) * (7) GERRY & THE PACEMAKERS – Ferry ’Cross The Mersey * (19) THE KINKS – Tired Of Waiting(1) THE MOODY BLUES – Go Now ® * * although this show is wiped, these performances still existI'm always intrigued to the logic involved in wiping the reels, I mean why certain episodes were wiped and others kept? And how did tracks such as THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS – You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ survive? Did some bozo go into the vaults and pick a reel at random? And as for the audience Colin that's odd because according to the database below The Righteous Brothers and Gerry & the Pacemakers never appeared on the same episode, not that I'm doubting you, it's either a database error (or I need glasses). ;D z6.invisionfree.com/popscene/index.php?showtopic=8861

Possibly one or other was recorded as an insert on the same session (with same audience) in be slotted into a future edition?

BBC paperwork might prove the point but I've always believed the items existing from 21-1-65 is a reel of items Johnnie Stewart had telerecorded for usage in future editions since I believe he would try and predict which discs would rise in following weeks then have those items telerecorded during live transmission so then he could recycle those performances. No doubt the number ones would be kept for Christmas shows in case that act wasn't available. The Keith Badman Record Collector features showed that very often in the mid 60's, repeated clips would be from T/R's as opposed to VT's. It seems most 1964 and 1965 editions were never even recorded complete in the first place.
So, I think 21-1-65 is possibly the earliest, maybe only surviving example of such a practice since the early 1964 clips are generally pre-recorded inserts (where are the audience?) - Roy Orbison and The Supremes being isolated clips retained for Christmas specials or whatever. It seems there is no logic or reason behind what has survived from the early days, but... just the way it is. Sad to think that once upon a time there would had been many more insert reels like that in existence.

I've always been fascinated in just how certain orphan clips came to survive in the first place.
The 1964 inserts can be explained away as being plain insert pieces, but clips like 'The Last Time' (11 March 1965) have baffled me with their (very fortunate!!) survival.
The same goes for any early 70s orphan, (with the exeception of the Bob Pratt tapes), such as 'Hot Love'.
