Hello George, in regard to progress that's a question for someone else. I've passed the details onto Richard Bignell who, as I'm sure you're aware, has a vast amount of research knowledge and skills aquired over many years. I've also CC'd the details to Paul Vanezis.
I called the shop last week to ask if they had any 16mm film, at that time they did not. However, the shop deals with house clearances (as I understand it) so there is a very high turnover of goods. Not everyone in the shop knows exactly what is there and when. However, after speaking to them and sending in a very close friend who lives locally, I can confirm that at this point they have no 16mm film prints of ANY kind. When I asked if they get film prints in, he said it was 'unusual, but sometimes.' He couldn't recall if there had been film in the shop in the last few weeks, which is understandable given the size of the place/amount of stock passing through the doors/piled up on chairs etc. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful than that.

Thanks for your through followup. You were very helpful.
Its unfortunate that there was no verification of the story.. not only any films left but anyone remembering having them.
While most antique shops I have been into dont have high turnover, Im not saying its impossible. The whole stack being gone and none left in a short time is cautious also.
The takeaway is that whenever a lead of this nature occurs is that time is very important in processing leads. Followup should occur immediately not the following week. I understand that you can only work as fast as your given the information and apreciate what you've done.
I think Richard Bignell and Paul V are great choices for the next step followup. So far unfortunately the story is unverifiable.

Sounds like a large operation. I've been trying to search for places like that to visit in my area. Only antique stores we have are furniture stores. EDIT: In regards to the High Turnover. If they deal with house clearances in the city of York, then maybe they ship furniture and stuff out quickly to smaller shops around the area? I ... don't really know how these things work. >.> But if they continuously receive house clearances I can imagine them needing to do something quick with the stuff. Antique stores here are funny. Last Christmas I went into one that had received one property owners collection of gas-lit lamps. They had hundreds of them ... and did their best to convince me that my brother wanted one.

Hi All
Apart from being an interesting thread which has went on tangents somewhat (and some heated discussions)
Can i ask where we are going with the finding out the shop etc? by now we've been discovering that it doesnt get 16mms often and when they do - nobody there notices.
my guess is the only point of interest is perhaps attempting to see if the film is a better copy than the one(s) in the archive.
This would involve the intrusive way of asking who has got it and finding the tape to see the quality? (any takers?)
Also - its very likely the owner is aware of the significance of the film and is no stranger to this forum (and perhaps others) to see whether it has qualities and value alike?
After all in the 21st century, the 16mm fandom will be limited and dr who will be quite obvious as a star item.

I recall, back from the days when I was a VAT man, that you can’t sell stuff without receipts and for tax purposes you need nasty stuff like invoices and stock sheets. If this junk shop sold a bunch of 16mm films they should some sort of record for revenue purposes, shouldn’t they? My VAT days are long gone but I can’t imagine things have changed that much. I would imagine being a bits n bobs shop, the description would be vague at the best of times. Small collection of tins might describe this or if in a box with other related items then 'junk box' might be more convenient for writing down. unless it was a 'cash job' and the owner forgot to fill the paperwork

These are my current thoughts.
1. The poster did give his name/phone number and the contact info of a shop to Richard Tipple 2. The store in the story has been approached and so far there was no evidence found of any prints there. 3. So far, there is no evidence of any prints having been there in the last week. 4. So far, no one there remembers any prints having been there.
I dont know what kind of business it is. Some businesses which clear our lockers may not catalog everything in the locker and sell it in bulk not knowing everything there. Many dealers who have ebay stores would have a record of transactions. I dont know if Mr Dutton knows who he spoke to and if that employee could add further details.
My current label on this story has become unverifable although not impossible.
The fact that its an existing episode already may limit the actual need of further research and time spent elsewhere. However, if Richard Bignell and/or Paul V's curiousity is peaked, then perhaps we will hear more.
My thoughts is let Richard and Paul do what they wish and let them follow up as they feel is important. If their time is limited, I would much rather them spending their time trying to locate a missing show rather than a duplicate film print.
But my thoughts are lets go on and live the rest of our lives, if someone feels they have some special skill to add to this project I recommend contacting Richard and either work with him or have him pass the project along. If Mr Duttons help is needed, its appreciated if he works with Richard in private.
I personally am moving on as there is nothing more I can do on this.

Did anything ever come of the Daleks print in Leeds?

Not that I'm aware of. Apparently the store was located, checked out, and the print was not there. End of lead.

Hello all, my first post on here.
I'm not sure which is the right thread for this, didn't want to start a new post so have just plumped for this one.
When I was a kid there was a random repeat of a Troughton episode. My memories are a bit vague but what I remember is that it was the six week school holiday and I was surprised to see it, so that probably makes it quite a few years after Troughton left. I left School in 1981 so I'm going to guess it was late 70's or very beginning of the 80s.
It was a 'random' episode and not part of a repeated series and it was on BBC2 in the daytime. I'm going to guess it was on because the cricket was rained off or something. It might be this episode isn't a lost one, but if it is 'lost', given that it was repeated does it follow that it might be 'found' if it was put back in a different place to where it would normally be?
Does anyone remember seeing it - if so is it 'lost', and (just because its gnawing at me) does anyone know which episode it was?
Cheers all
Andrew

Everything that was left was accounted for in 1978.

I'm not aware that any out-of-Doctor repeats were shown until the Five Face season. I find it particularly unlikely that a random Troughton episode would have been shown in place of sport, rather than a Baker. I believe there was an unscheduled repeat of The Sea Devils omnibus in either 1973 or 74 in place of sports coverage and also a showing of one of the Cushing movies, but unfortunately, I think your memory is playing tricks.

There was an unplanned repeat of the Jon Pertwee story The Sea Devils, as a replacement for a cricket match, in 1974. I suspect this is what the poster is remembering.

In Wiped talking about sales to New Zealand it refers to film prints being lent out to schools for viewing such as a couple of episodes of the Macra Terror. However, this was before they destroyed them when the liscence to hold them expired. We just have to hope more prints marked for destruction were picked up by collectors and that they still have them somewhere, although getting the word out in Australia and New Zealand might be harder than here in the UK. BTW any know of any further plans to show Airlock and UM2 this year, been waiting a long time already, having to wait until next year just seems forever!

Well, I suspect I speak for the majority in saying that seeing an episode or two from Macra would be amazing! I think the wait for the DVD release of the two recently recovered episodes shouldn't be too long now. I would imagine news will be forthcoming shortly
