Certainly looks like it! Wasn't "HHSTC" from early 1967 though?

That was what I believe!! The person who posted the clip, does have Semi Detatched Suburban, which does come from 1966, so it may have been a mistake.

This clip is from TOTP and has been in circulation for some years. I believe it was rock writer Keith Badman who uncovered it first of all, although i'm not sure if a better copy has so far surfaced (presumably there is a t/r of the clip somewhere that this copy was sourced from).

That was my understanding, but he also has Semi Detatched Suburban posted too, so may have been an error.

Yes, both songs exist from TOTP (seemingly as inserts) somewhere out there.

a bit washed out but absoloutly fantastic to see it at last, what other "missing" 60's clips exist that are likely to turn up on youtube et al? Some already have I know I've seen them and they've been posted here but there are a few as yet not youtubed.

Considering how much of Totp is missing it really suprises me how many Manfred Mann clips exist , but the one i want to see is Pretty Flamingo .

Judging by the quality of the film recording (lots of 'sparkle & dirt) and the presence of the cue dot marks at the end, I would have said it was a possible f/r insert provided to another show (maybe american - the vhs tfr looks a bit camera copyish even with the poor quality).

A very good deduction there David. Would tend to agree, does look a bit camera copyish. However, this might just be a poor low-gen copy ? Would like to think with Keith Badman sourcing these, that the original 16mm tr-inserts would be in safe hands. Would think that as well with the presence of the cue dot markers, this would seem to make sense here. Rather like the Hollies- Bus Stop 1966 TOTP insert clip uploaded on YT of late.
I remember seeing Semi-Detached Suburban Mr. James previously on YouTube ( was later removed by the poster, similar quality footage ). Ha Ha Said The Clown was a new one to me however here. What an absolute treat to view, no matter the quality is still better than nothing at all!! I would like to think that as well Ewan, that further gems are still floating about on the Internet. As Ray's and my finds in that area have gone to show, there are indeed items still left out in the cold so to speak! Time to suit up, and get on with the hunt...
Cheers, Lance.

I know i've mentioned it before but, funnily enough, at an early MBW (where poor quality TOTP clips were shown), Keith Badman was present and it was mentioned by John Platt (another pop researcher) that evidence suggested missing pop TV material was possibly residing in the U.S. So you could possibly be right about those clips, David. I bet there are more too.

These 'inserts' present a mystery. I tried to follow up the emergence of The Hollies 'Bus Stop' when that showed up from the US and that appeared to be a stand alone insert that MAY have been used in American video Jukeboxes in the 60's rather than used in a US tv show. Some others including the Manfred Mann clips (Semi & Clown) are maybe from the same source and used for the same purpose. There is however no documentation that i can find that the BBC supplied clips either to US shows or for the jukeboxes. If these were supplied for Jukeboxes there are possibly a lot more of them to be discovered. Unless there is a trail to follow with paperwork then the only hope is them showing up at auctions or youtube.

Have you tried checking into paperwork at BBC Written Archives, Paul? Just to see if there is any contract info to indicate whether clip sales happened for this purpose or not? It could be worth looking into.
I think you're right though that if these clips were indeed used for this purpose, then it's unlikely that they were the only ones!

Laurence, i haven't directly checked the BBC for the paperwork myself, but have been told by other researchers that there appears to be no trail to follow on that front.
