Semi-Detached suburban is an Insert from French TV - will check which show when I check my sources at home - original is in reasonable (videotape) quality from what I remember.
Ha Ha Said the Clown is from NTSC Insert tape sources - the clip has been around in collectors circles for a long time (15-20 years) at the end of a compile of scopitone music clips (mainly American). I will have to check the quality of my videotape but I am positive it is better than what has been posted on Youtube. I should have rewatched this clip long ago as it obviously is TOTP but did not put two & two together at the time.

Scopitone, eh? Another TOTP trail leading to clip use on video jukeboxes! Seems like a possible lead for missing footage is starting to develop here...

Interesting that both are sourced from different countries as this would suggest the BBC wee actively providing clips of TOTP's back then. The more countries / shows that they provided to the better chance of survival! The laws of probability would also suggest that these were not one offs so here's hoping others turn up. Shame the beeb can't be bothered in doing their own investigative work and get the clips back!

There's a really classy TOTP compilation to be assembled if anyone gets round to gathering up: a) all the orphaned performances we know reside outside the BBC, either in overseas archives or private collections, b) all the obscure Bob Pratt etc. material that's actually in the archives yet remains unseen and c) all the odd inserts and specially made TOTP films. Even without the latter, there must be a solid 60 to 90 minutes of performances existing out there.

It's like that one surviving fragment of a Beatles Top of the Pops performance. Twenty seconds of "Ticket To Ride", great quality and an interesting performance. It was copied off for an episode of Dr Who to be shown on a TV screen, so they only needed a small piece. They obviously filed it away for safety, someplace else.

what is the status of archive research into the Dutch and German tv Archives, as concerns british clips/inserts etc? I know much has been done but how far did they get?
