I must say, I would be shocked if the present holders of what was the ATV archive have destroyed the surviving episodes. I have the first of the large format Kal guides and according to that the following existed: Sr:1 eps 1-5 (b/w f/r) Ep:6 (CVT), eps8-14 Wiped Sr:2 only the last episode 'Kids' survives on CVT (my Ex partner Nick Page is in that one). Sr:3:eps 6.11 &13 only exist on CVT, rest are wiped. Having just checked lostshows for the title, it appears you are right. If lostshows present listings are correct, since 1995 all the f/r episodes are now missing and just the ones originally survivng on 2" now exist! Perhaps Chris could confirm that is now the case?

Yes sadly David, more were wiped circa 1998 when Polygram had the archive. A lot of the tr's had burnt in arabic subtitles and were considered no use for resale so the prints were junked.

Thanks for that Chris, My listing books are the original black on white ones from 1995. Can I be safe in assuming other ATV series where it states arabic/spanish burnt in subs are probably gone as well? Davidxx

Disgusting archiving.
Regarding ATV holdings generally, Chris, the pattern seems to be that although they are better than some other ITV companies for '50s and '60s material, holdings are far worse than the rest of the "big five" in the '70s and beyond. Was this the case at the time, do you know (i.e. ATV archiving policy was worse) or are their bigger '70s gaps down to the company changing hands several times in the '80s and '90s (i.e. stuff being junked at a later stage)? Just curious to know.

No idea why the picture is so random Laurence.
David is right - any material regarded as inferior quality was junked - lots of Rupert shows, Hunter's Walk, one colour tr of Escape Into Night to name but a few.
Stuff sold by ITC sales seems to have often survived as telerecordings, but I'm at a loss to know why some series are better represented than others.

Many thanks for that confirmation Chris. It could bring you to tears finding out that sort of thing. It does make you wonder why they've kept odd VT's from series, they obviously can't sell as complete. I know the BBC were bad in destroying what they did over the years, but at least that had mostly stopped by the early 80's. It looks like thanks to the IBA's Franchise decisions around the same time, ATV and Southern's material still got thrown away. To hear the (probably only) colour material from Escape into night was destroyed, is dreadful! I'm now going into a corner to cry........

I feel the same way, David, if it's any consolation. Terrible that these companies were behaving in this fashion as recently as that and unilaterally taking decisions to destroy material that people like us would like to see again (subtitles or not). I bet no outside agency was consulted either. They just went ahead and destroyed what were effectively the only remaining copies of material in existence. It doesn't give you any heart, does it?

terrible to hear something was destroyed so recently.
i thought that the BFI would take in anything that wasn't being retained by the copyright owners?
if so, is the BFI being proactive enough in keeping in contact with these companies to ensure that programmes of supposedly 'no further commercial value' are retained for future generations?

i thought that the BFI would take in anything that wasn't being retained by the copyright owners? quote] Not a chance, unfortunately. To be honest, the BFI are not up to the job of looking after TV in addition to cinema. That's been proved time after time by the amount of stuff they could have saved yet turned down. There needs to be another body dedicated to archiving TV specifically. Perhaps one day Kaleidoscope's operation will be put on such a footing..?
