www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7bVtjcZ3ToDon't get too excited as there are only excerpts, but - after my long 'holiday', a re-appearance of 'Judy Teen' from youtube. Cockney Rebel fans will be aware that this is perhaps the most sought after appearance of the band. The poster obviously has a longer version of this, but even the few seconds on here are welcome.

very interesting. hes taken a very small length of footage and cropped it then used cropped sections to give the impression of a different piece of film and form a longer section. cant be much more than a couple of seconds of actual footage. be interesting to know what hes actually got

It will.
I am aware the audio is not the correct one, coming from a contemporary Radio One show.

Is this definitely from TOTP? It probably is but i'm just thinking aloud.
There was also a video promo of some kind for this song which seems to have disappeared altogether. I seem to recall part being used in Pop Quiz but that's the only sighting i've had of it since the '80s!

Yes, I'm sure it is.
The previous thread (3017) entions that the band had to all mime playing guitars due to a localized industrial dispute at the BBC. The video has been seen before (as mentioned in the previous thread) and the set and the fact it is Cockney Rebel mk 1 (in terms of personnel), plus the link to the original discoverers of the footage (Blue Orange, a fan group) leaves me in little doubt!

This is definitely genuine footage of Judy Teen from TOTP's 23/5/74. The obvious giveaway is the drummer Stewart Elliot and keyboard player Milton Reame-James both playing guitars. This happened because a strike at the beeb at the time didn't allow band's to bring their own drums and keyboards on to the set. Another giveaway is the woman(a girl named Lu playing the part of Judy Teen) sitting at the front of the stage. In the footage you can just see the top of her head! As a Cockney Rebel collector i'm familiar with Blue Orange who sent out free DVD's to fans a few years ago. Some snippets of Judy Teen were included but this version seems to tie in the music to the images. As was mentioned earlier the edit has cleverly turned a short amount of film into a few minutes.Having said that i e-mailed Blue Orange a while back and they said that they had more Super-8 footage of the performance which they didn't consider good enough to make the DVD.Maybe someone with a knowledge of film restoration could do something with it?? For a Cockney Rebel fan it's still great to see. Most of us have the original audio anyway and with a bit of work this could easily be married up with the You Tube footage to make a more authentic finish. Whatever way you look at it,Cockney Rebel fan or not, it is the only bit of footage available from this particular show.Note the rather sparce looking set!!

Never seen that background on totp before though. www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/84894303/RedfernsIt's certainly nothing like the background from 1st may 1974. Although i suspect that that date is wrong, looks more like the 'come up and see me' era.

Paul - the very good Getty Images pic you linked is Cockney Rebel MARK TWO - which featured a different line up.
The stage for this edition was presumably sparse, due to the strike!

Thought that was the case when i saw it, thanks Ray.
I've looked through the nearest surviving totp's "2nd May 74" & "6th June 74" (clips only), and there are no signs of that background.
I thought the strike didn't start till mid june though?
The only thing i can suggest is, this is not the totp regular studio?

There were quite a few industrial disputes throughout the 70's; I believe this was a demarcation dispute, as opposed to the technicians' dispute that kept TOTP off the air during late June, July and early August 1974.
The story goes that this is why there are no drums or keyboards present, as the musicians would not have been allowed to haul or install any "live" instruments (i.e anything that required amplification or assembly, as such).

The last couple of photos are from the Make Me Smile era which would be Cockney Rebel Mark 2.The song itself is a 'sneer' at his original band who dared to suggest that they wanted to co-write some of the songs! You can guess what happened next??!! As for the Judy Teen studio background i've never seen anything remotely similar to this. I know that another group made their TOTP's debut on the same show. The band being Showaddywaddy with Hey Rock n Roll.I guess they were also forced to perform without drums and keyboards? Steve Harley recently discussed his TOTP's debut and the situation he and the band found themselves in. They had to play makeshift guitars because of a strike by the 'set shifters'. They had their own drums and keyboards but couldn't move them by themselves.A kind of flying picket situation stopping them setting up their own gear! Regardless of this the band, especially a rather 'menacing' Harley, put in a memorable performance and the single shot up the charts. It would be nice to see other performances from this show to see how other bands coped with the strike.Any Showaddywaddy fans out there?

As far as I know Showaddywaddy filmed their debut TOTP appearance on the Morecambe & Wise set. I'm sure somebody here will have more info.
