The 3 January 1973 'The Jean Genie' TOTP soundtrack was played on Johnnie Walker's 'Sounds of the 70s' on BBC Radio 2 this afternoon in full – no talking over it, no early fade, even including DB's 'thanks' at the end. You can listen again. It's about 1h 10m into the show. Johnnie Walker phoned me just before the show to check a few facts and kindly credited Richard (Dickie) Chamberlain who did the live audio mix. It was a double goodie for Bowie fans with 'The Little Drummer Boy' with Bing Crosby also played. I'm now getting ready to go to TOTP2 in the morning. John, I just saw the posts about your Jean Genie footage. What a great story. I live in the U.S., where so many TV broadcasts recorded on 2 inch or 1 inch tape were wiped and reused because of the cost. Also, with home vcr's not going up for sale in the states until around 1976 (Sony Betamax and actually before that a unit called the Quasar "Time Machine"), I'm sure the networks, stations etc. didn't think that there'd ever be a market for home video. I was curious about your music video career. Which Paul McCartney and George Harrison music videos did you work on? I'm guessing perhaps the With a Little Luck, London Town, and I've Had Enough videos for McCartney and perhaps the Blow Away promo for Harrison? Did you work with Keefco? Through the magic of the Net, I'll be looking forward to seeing the Jean Genie clip on the TOTP2 special tomorrow night. Thanks for the info, Marshall My list of George Harrison's top five music videos (not spam!): marshfish.hubpages.com/hub/The-top-five-music-videos-by-George-HarrisonJohn also worked on 'Back to the Egg', broadcast once - in 1981 - on the BBC in an afternoon slot, which by fluke I managed to catch. There are some excellent promos within that.

Or, as it was intended, on my mobile phone!
"Pour me out another phone" Yeah, Dave, too true! Phones are so disposable and cheap nowadays, there you go no problem! "I'll ring and see if our friends are home" um, they might be out but then they would have their phone with them, you haven't thought this one through ay?

Well, today's the day we've all been waiting for. My Christmas gift for all true Bowie fans. It gives me great pleasure because you have waited patiently for so long and have been so supportive of me. And I'm also delighted to find that there are decent people on other forums too. Thanks to them too. I've been to the BBC and taken the master tape. Mark Cooper has re-edited TOTP2 to incorporate it. All that remains now is to tune in to BBC2 from 7.30–9.00pm tonight,21 December 2011. Oh, and don't forget to set your PVRs. Tomorrow it will be old news. The world will have it. There is a BBC Press Release about it at www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/211211-lost-bowie-footage.html It's in most of the daily newspapers and the BBC has sent a news crew and Will Gompertz (the man Meryl Streep fancies) to interview me. It will be on the main BBC1 news tonight 21 December at 6pm – unless something really important upstages us. The phone is ringing constantly. The only one I haven't heard from is the Palace (thanks for the nomination!) but there's still time – the New Year honours are still more than a week away One thing I'd like to clarify is that this recording was NEVER lost. Missing, perhaps, but lost? No. I knew I had it all along and stored it – and hundreds more yet to be catalogued – most carefully. I just didn't realise that no one else had it until that day when Ray Langstone contacted me on your behalf. I haven't had time to send any Christmas cards or buy any presents. The Christmas tree had been sitting ouside, undecorated, for almost two weeks until we decorated it in case it would be in shot for BBC News. (It wasn't.) Tomorrow the story will be history and we can all get on with our Christmas preparations. I haven't had time to reply to all your questions here yet. I hope to get round to them soon. Meanwhile if you want to contact me please use the form eMail on my website at www.epi-centre.com. I'll always be glad to hear from you. Enjoy tonight's TOTP2. Best regards and a Merry Christmas to you all. John

John, you are a legend. I hope that Will Gompertz (a dear friend of mine, as it happens) was appropriately deferential. with all best wishes for a happy christmas - and I do hope you get a few minutes to celebrate this great occasion. Martin

I'd just like to mark this line in the sand as the day TOTP's Jean Genie finally gets a re-broadcast on the BBC, an historic day, and one that without all the endeavours of many on this site would not be happening. I hope the historical importance of these unseen archival recordings are now held in a new light to both artists, record/video companies, broadcasters and the general public. May the search continue for new material.... Always now.

Been watching this story from the instant I heard the Johnny Walker broadcast and have been waiting for this day to post . I was a massive Bowie addict back in 72/73, aged 12. More to the point I was a massive totp fan and never used to miss it...except for one show, yep there must have been something exceptional on Granada that night, totp was a family viewing thing in our house, viewed by all and never missed, however my parents wanted to watch something else that night and the kids missed the show...I didnt even know bowie was going to be on, trust me there would have been a right kick off! . The next day all my mates were talkin about the previous nights show and I was gutted that I had missed the performance. So tonights the night that history repeats it's self proving the point that everything comes to he who waits. A sincere thank you to John for allowing us the opportunity to view the footage and for giving us a super story to follow. Hopefully other people who know that they have this type of footage follow your fantastic example. Thanks again John, now get that christmas tree up!!!

John, I'm very excited to see the programme later this evening and will check out the 6 o'clock news also. I daren't think what else might turn up from your collection of tapes that have been sat in 'Big Yellow Storage'. Hopefully we'll find out soon enough. You've referred to some of the visual effects you were responsible for that were utilised in the show over a number of years and would like to hear more about that. Maybe when the current commotion has calmed down a bit you might give us an insight here in to the story behind those in relation to TOTP.
Have a great evening tonight and a well deserved Merry Christmas. Mark

bloody brilliant reading all the media reports made my hairs stand up the interest sparked by john coming forward can, hopefully, lead to others coming forward. This has also sparked huge interest from fans of other performers of the era too, as well as people who have never given archive or missing footage a second thought. In just over 3 hours time all will be revealed the anticipation and excitement is building as we wait to view a TOTP2 that will have it's biggest ever viewing figures, we should also thank the TOTP2 team for acting upon and showing this remarkable footage, indeed TOTP2 should now consider showing other recoveries in all their glory, something we have been saying for years. One final word of thanks to john and all who played a part a very merry Xmas everybody.

Ok, i'm excited now! Just seen clips on the BBC News, makes you wonder how many other behind the scenes staff have asked for footage!
Thank you a million times over John for having for foresight to ask for a copy.
I notice the same effect pops up in a later programme "The Tomorrow People - The Medusa Strain", did you work on that as well?
