That really is something special. Will be a much repeated clip in future much like Bowie's own Starman and Hendrix on Lulu. Really special. Well worth the wait. Thank you very much. (by the power of skyplus i'll be watching that a few more times this evening ;D )

What a great clip! Got the DVD recorder going just in time, and have just watched it back (first of many times, I think!) Many, many thanks John for all your efforts and it was good to see you were mentioned in the captions. I think I spotted you in the clip too! Looking forward to next year's documentary to hear your story...and the caption/voiceover free version, of course!
Thanks too to Mark Cooper for adding in the performance!

I'm not a big bowie fan but that was fantastic!
Bitter sweet though considering all the other great performances that were wiped.
Now waiting for the next big find!

Oh My God, that gave me pins and needles all over my face! Absolutely stunning performance that showed exactly why the Glam Rock era was such an exciting period in music. It really is the greatest Top Of The Pops recovery of all time. Thank you once again John, you've made Christmas 2011 a very special one indeed. I wish you a very Merry Christmas.

Just to echo everyone else's comments... thanks so much John, best TOTP find ever and the goosebumps haven't subsided yet!
In the cold light of day when the excitement has died down, I think two aspects will still be telling. Firstly David and The Spiders' performance was absolutely exhilarating, in this case the live performance really was better than the record! Secondly, the fisheye lens effect which John pioneered was top-class. It really gave us a super perspective of the band and how they fitted in the studio environment. I was also pleased there were some shots of the audience - always gives the performance some historical perspective (... there's no mistaking the glam-rock era!). Merry Christmas Everybody!

This was great to watch.
Great to see the fish lens in action, I've seen it used on other shows from the same period, along with the fly's eye & CSO used at lot on Glam Rock era TOTP.
I don't think I've seen any other live in studio performances from TOTP from this period.
There seemed to be a lot in the late 1970's (ie: Yvonne Elliman singing I've I Can't Have You) & the early 1990's.

As expected it was cropped for widescreen (the current version on YouTube is squeezed to 4:3 from the 16:9 broadcast) and, of course, it includes the obligatory TOTP2 voiceover and captions. No doubt someone will upload a better version soon using the audio from one of the recent radio broadcasts?

I know it's slightly off topic , but is it me being pickey why don't the bbc show the original clips of Slade and Wizzard from 73 instead of the remakes from the 80s as they did on Totp2 tonight.

Not really a David Bowie fan but that clip may have created a new convert because the performance was absolutely sensational even compared to the high standards set by many other artists. Wonderful!
(It's a pity that they crop everything for widescreen viewing but that's ignorant modern production values for you, though it won't be too long before the original will be viewable in its full glory.)

I find it hard to believe the so called Top Of The Pops appearance was played on Pop Quiz. Surely if it was it would have been put on youtube by now? Probably the Mick Rock promo was shown, but until someone locates the Pop Quiz clip I don't believe it was featured. I only have one old Pop Quiz featuring Clem Burke (Blondie) which I think might have used a Bowie clip, but it definately was NOT 'Jean Genie' from TOTP. John Henshall had the clip not the BBC so it wouldn't have been possible. Seems to have been a misremembered showing of 'Starman'; unless they played Jean Genie over the stills from the TOTP.

So far I'm aware of the following Bowie appearances on the original Pop Quiz (1981-1984): S01E02 The Jean Genie (Musikladen, 1978) S02E08 Starman (TOTP, 1972) S03E08 Oh! You Pretty Things (OGWT, 1972) S03E12 China Girl (video, 1983) S04E03 Space Oddity (original video from "Love You Till Tuesday") S04E07 Queen Bitch (OGWT, 1972) S04E08 Ashes to Ashes (video, 1980) S04E13 Five Years (OGWT, 1972) As you can see there were several rare Bowie clips that probably hadn't been aired much, if at all, before being included on the show. I've uploaded a clip of the Jean Genie question on Pop Quiz here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCQO5fJoBPwOf course, now that it has aired on TOTP2 I could insert part of the TOTP performance into that clip and really confuse everyone! ;D
