I got smiley goosepimples as my eyes read through John's post saying that the clip WOULD be on TOTP2 on December 21st..!! This a genuine bona-fide "excited by TV moment from the seventies" for me. Just like we used to feel.
JOHN.....THANK YOU FOR MAKING A LOAD OF OLD CROTCHETY CRUSTIES ON HERE FEEL YOUNG AGAIN..!! ;D
You deserve that knighthood. Now I have to stock up on shandy and ham sandwiches with mustard for the transmission for the full childhood effect..!!
Thomas.

Hi John,
Great to hear that the clip will be specially edited into TOTP2 for Wednesday, and I'll just add my thanks for all your efforts in making this happen and for keeping your recording all this time in the first place and making it available! Nice comments too in relation to Mark Cooper - he seems like exactly the kind of person in his role that we all want!
I'll still be tuning into "Tales From Television Centre" when it gets shown, not just for a "clean" performance minus captions and voiceovers, but as I'm always interested in the technical/behind the scenes stories. It's great that yourself and your former colleagues will be getting some recogition of what they did back in the day. The clips and shows from early 1970's TOTP which survive today still pack a punch today in terms of effects and visuals when compared to later equivalent shows!
Mark

The 3 January 1973 'The Jean Genie' TOTP soundtrack was played on Johnnie Walker's 'Sounds of the 70s' on BBC Radio 2 this afternoon in full – no talking over it, no early fade, even including DB's 'thanks' at the end. You can listen again. It's about 1h 10m into the show. Johnnie Walker phoned me just before the show to check a few facts and kindly credited Richard (Dickie) Chamberlain who did the live audio mix. It was a double goodie for Bowie fans with 'The Little Drummer Boy' with Bing Crosby also played. I'm now getting ready to go to TOTP2 in the morning.

Just a quick note here for John Henshall whom I met at the 'Missing, Believed Wiped' event; it is that this is not just about saving an item for the fans of a specific item or entertainer, or enthusiasts of archive television, or even the copyright holders and television organizations, it is about saving the nation's television heritage. In consequence, John Henshall deserves the nation's thanks.
Yours,

Yeah I listened to that today John. Even though we never heard the three takes I'd imagine this unique version was the best one. The 'thanks' at the end is really cute, I almost missed it at the BFI because of my enthusiasm applauding, but caught it on the second screening. Great to hear the full thing on the radio (for the second time) but it will be even better when we have the pleasure of watching it on the television. As well as a DVD release this would also be a great addition to a new 'complete' version of 'Bowie At The Beeb' CD. That's both versions played on the radio complete and uninterrupted now, let's hope TOTP2 will do the same!

and still the Bowie fraternity are uploading audio from the BFI showing, the most recent one was uploaded a full day before the radio 2 tx which proves it came from the screening footage, the only difference is the uploader credits John with text copied and pasted from the media reports.

I think the less said about that lot, the better. They're obviously happy watching shaky camcorder/phone footage, which no doubt is where the audio you talk about comes from. The audio has been played twice on the radio now though so maybe they got it from John's Radio Oxford interview.

There are several uploads on YouTube that credit the Malcolm Boyden show from 14th December as the source. Just a few more days and there'll be multiple video versions as well...

The last time i saw this clip i was 6 years old, watching a black & white tv and sitting on the floor in me PJ's while the heat from our council flat central heating system dried my hair from the bath i'd just had... i always remember in the 80's when i eventually got round to buying "Aladdin sane" how the guitar sound sounded tame, compared to a sub conscience version i had in my head..THIS MUST BE IT, Bowie was the first pop star i idolized, i went to punk to rock to everything... i can't wait to see this.. i'm not even interested in peeking at YOUTUBE, John is this clip gonna make me remember the way Dairylea spread sandwiches used to taste, good on ya, Cheers mate.

I'm with you on this. I'd like to point out, that despite my SMALL role in getting the Jean Genie footage to be saved/aired, I haven't seen it yet, and I'm going to watch it the way it was intended. On TV.

I have this vision in my head of the end scene in Star Wars Episode 1V where Luke Skywalker and Han Solo go up to collect their medals but instead it's John Henshall and Bob Pratt.
We are all in the audience clapping.
Not sure who would be giving them the medals though?

If it was '73, I'd have to get a b/w Rediffusion to be strictly accurate!

I was lucky to catch a mention of this on Radio 2 a couple of weeks ago, a day or 2 before the Dr Who recoveries were announced.
I remember reading someting on line about a company who specialise in transferring old videotapes.
One of the harder jobs were recovering a David Bowie concert from the mid 1970s from an obscure semi-pro format.
His management were impressed that it was possible as it was the only known copy of the performance, which was in Germany.

John, I just saw the posts about your Jean Genie footage. What a great story. I live in the U.S., where so many TV broadcasts recorded on 2 inch or 1 inch tape were wiped and reused because of the cost. Also, with home vcr's not going up for sale in the states until around 1976 (Sony Betamax and actually before that a unit called the Quasar "Time Machine"), I'm sure the networks, stations etc. didn't think that there'd ever be a market for home video. I was curious about your music video career. Which Paul McCartney and George Harrison music videos did you work on? I'm guessing perhaps the With a Little Luck, London Town, and I've Had Enough videos for McCartney and perhaps the Blow Away promo for Harrison? Did you work with Keefco? Through the magic of the Net, I'll be looking forward to seeing the Jean Genie clip on the TOTP2 special tomorrow night. Thanks for the info, Marshall My list of George Harrison's top five music videos (not spam!): marshfish.hubpages.com/hub/The-top-five-music-videos-by-George-Harrison
