Pardon me for asking, but what's the story behind that show from 1973 and the late Kenny Everett? I'm sorry, but as I'm from Germany I'm not too familiar with all facts behind TOTP!
Regards, Oliver.

There are officially only 4 regular TOTPs (plus of course the Xmas Day show & 10th aniversary special) existing in colour at the BBC from 1973, plus the b&w copy of 1-2-73... the 11.10.73 (501st) edition exists but as an unedited show (ie not as broadcast, probably links, performances + apparantly Kenny showing some kids around the studio & dressing rooms). It's of particular interest for being the sole surviving edition presented by Kenny during his brief stint that year as one of the TOTP team, and happened literally days before he quit R1 for the fledgling Capital Radio (his slot on TOTP was taken up by DLT before they added more presenters in 74)

Ah, thank you Chris for getting me informed. I'm very excited, that they will show TOTP again. Let's hope that all the necessary edits are made to the right editions and that they stop the butchering of others, for I'd like to see the shows as they were meant to be in their musically importance in history. Kind regards, Oliver.

It would be nice if they could include isolated performances from missing shows too, for example the zdf / and Pink Floyd material but I doubt this will happen. I too would like to see the recovered shows from Lulu and Diddy H shown but it will probably be the usual thinking!

I would like to see TOTP shows but whether any actually get shown, is another matter!

Hopefully when they do show them they will be of the high quality type Einfestival broadcast not the grainy garbage shown on U.K Gold. It would be nice if BBC4 could lose that logo or make it more invisible as ITV4 have recently done. ;D

I have E-mailed Richard Klein the Controller of BBC4 this evening and have asked him if anything rare is going to be screened.
I have made reference to the 6th March 1969 edition and the 11th October 1973 edition in my E-mail.
He usually takes a few days to reply but if I hear anything I'll post an update.

Is it known how this particular edition came to survive in this, un-edited format? Plus: I didn't realise that the 10th Anniversary edition offically existed at the BBC?

The one i would love to see in full is the one from the 26th of Feb 1970 with The Dave Clark five at the end. I've seen clips of this on You Tube and looks like it was a great edition - I believe this exists in a black and white telerecording.
By the way the editions I have watched via Einsfestival were in superb quality - have they been remastered ?
And hopefully the Lesley Judd episode surfaces.

Tony Blackburn has been on Twitter tonight and said he is going to BBC TV Center to record his part in the TOTP documentary. He said he was going to tell more about it when he has done it.

Diddy has confirmed to me that BBC4 will commence showing complete episodes of TOTP 1976 onwards, from April. He was told this while filming the interview at the BBC.

I would also like to see that Dave Clark Five edition although I thought that was being blocked as is Ready Steady Go. Talking of which when certain people 'block' episodes doesn't that mean they can only be blocked from showing them on terrestrial TV not a Freeview station? An example is Martin Shaw blocking the Professionals even though Freeview ITV4 seem to show an episode every day.
Reference the Einsfestival episodes I don't think they have been remastered I think they are just good copies from the 2" masters which have been broadcast without all that horrendous compression. Remember those U.K Gold editions...awful.

Richard Klein has replied to my E-mail.
He has confirmed they are showing TOTP's from 1976 onwards.
No word on anything else that I raised in my E-mail unfortunately and as I mentioned yesterday his E-mails are brief.
The only consolation I suppose as that we get to record what they are going to screen in digital quality rather than the old analogue set top box that was used to record those UK Gold repeats in the early to mid 90's.

Agree with you Richard regarding U.K Gold. However don't believe that old adage that digital is better than analogue because it isn't. When BBC2 broadcast a TOTP Disco special a couple of years ago I watched some of it on Digital (via a Sony Freeview box) and the picture was dire, compressed to bits and a very low bit rate creating a shimmering effect (due to a very low refresh rate). When I switched the same programme over to BBC2 analogue the picture was superior, far better colours and a much clearer picture. I don't think Einsfestival compressed their TOTP broadcasts at all, hence the very good quality Gladly the quality on BBC4 also seems quite good. Slightly off topic but I should add that movies that where shot onto 70mm film in the sixties are still higher quality than any modern digital films. If only the BBC had recorded all those early Top of the Pops episodes directly onto 35mm film.

Oh dear, just seen this comment from Tony Blackburn via Jezza posted over at the Mausoleum Club! "Just got home. Great news for top Of The Pops lovers.Starting in April every Thursday on BBC 4 you'll be able to see the show from 1976" The year the music died!!! ------ EDIT - I missed Richard's earlier reply, but 1976 it is then.
