In an interview circa 1981/2 (cant remember exactly, may have been Pebble Mill) Ray Davies stated that he had video tapes/reels of 'most' of the Kinks TV appearances. I think that may be the source of many Kinks clips that have survived. Perhaps someone should enquire to see if Ray recorded/has the full editions of the programmes that they appeared on? He stated that he had the Beat Room clip but that may have been from a compilation show. It pops up in Casey Casem's goldmine around that time. On the promo to Predictable which was in the 80's ray watches himself on tv and the Wonderboy promo along with a Shindig clip is used. Ray had a cine and he filmed a lot of the Kinks tours in America. In a docu you see a snippet of a bloke in a Texan hat and an interview with a Lola type (if you know what I mean) so maybe there is more of that around. LInking this to another thread about Kinks promos, there is a promo to Supersonic Rocket ship with the guys goofing around in a garden. There is also a short non concept promo promoting Sitting In the Midday Sun with the Kinks hair definately at its longest! We know the 67 totp cam from a rock star; any chance it was Dave Davies? He liked to spend his dough in the 60's.

I came to the series just before it ended - short run apparently 7 shows only. I think the wiping was down to the BBC2 policy with comedy. Apparently they wanted comedy tapes cleared off quickly so other genre shows could be recorded. I'm not sure John, as Open All Hours was first shown on BBC2 too and that exists in full. Surprising also that it was wiped as the character was a known popular quantity that had appeared in 2 LWT series prior to this. I would rather His Lordship entertains existed in full though, even if it meant a few OAH were missing! It was a highlight of Missing Believed Wiped for me and so good that at least one episode now is in the archives even if it's black and white. Dave

There are two people who have filmed extensively over the course of their careers which have lasted decades. Mick Clarke (of the Rubettes) has literally hours of stuff dating back to the mid 60's when he started his career with the Symbols. To give you an insight into just some of his gems, Mick was onstage with Elton John at Live Aid and was filming the whole time backstage.
When Brian Wilson turned up un-announced at Beach Boys fan club convention in Essex (with Dr Eugene Landy as party of his therapy), it was Mick's little gig PA Wilson sang through (Mick and Tony Rivers were the turn).
He has footage of the Beach Boys joining the Symbols onstage at the Magical Mystery Tour premiere party.
Ray Davies has been fascinated by film from literally day one. I remember watching a bunch of cine films from the 60's which he'd had transferred onto VHS (DVD hadn't been invented at that time).
He had a broadcast standard video camera and was filming stuff literally everyday in the late 80's early 90's.
My guess is at some point there will be some kind of lifetime career film produced. Just maybe a few of these tv clips will show up in that.
I don't have any knowledge of the recent TOTP footage but it is far more likely to have come from Ray than Dave.

To be honest I didn't recall that from the time anyway. I recall during the first repeats wondering why it had been kept and 'Lordship' not. as it seemed so ordinary and dull. Yes there were comments to the effect some time ago on the forum that someone at the Head of BBC2 had stipulated that comedy shows be wiped quickly. This came up in response to queries why tape material for 'Where was Spring'; 'Making Faces'; 'Broaden your mind'; 'Perils of Pendragon' and 'His Lordship' had all been wiped. Now one thought I've had was maybe there was some kind of copyright problem that arose due to the transfer over of all the 'Hark at Barker' Characters and cast. If the returned T/R came from abroad, could be that the copyright didn't apply overseas, allowing sales, but prevented any repeat here prompting them to wiped the tapes? Sorry to be o/t on the general subject of MBW..

As Ray seemed to try and keep material he was involved with, I wonder if he has "What Did You Say This Thing Was Called, Love?" or any of it's follow up series "Where Was Spring?" He provided / performed a specially written song for each edition. Just a thought as the whole series is missing.

Sorry to be o/t on the general subject of MBW.. One important factor being overlooked here is the date - "Open All Hours" started in 1976, which means by the time it would have come up for wiping after the UK repeat window was over, the BBC archive had been established and it would have been retained for that. There is a lot more material from 1975 and before that is missing, but a lot of the general wiping stopped after that, at least it became much more selective and took longer to happen if at all.

Don't you mean "At the Eleventh Hour" rather than "What did you say this thing was called, love?": incidentally, where did you get the latter title from?

"What Did You Say This Thing Was Called, Love" was the pilot for "Where Was Spring?", which came a few months later. I'd forgotten about "At The Eleventh Hour" though - that's another missing one (not connected to the former)!

Ray had a cine and he filmed a lot of the Kinks tours in America. He liked to spend his dough in the 60's. I think the film with the Lola type was cine film from off stage during a Kinks early '70s American tour. I have seen some footage like this before now cut to a recording of either Sitting In My Hotel or Celluloid Heroes. I think I have heard there was a vague plan to make an on the road documentary at one time. I wish it had been made. Dave

I did get a bit more information about the Top Of The Pops Dave Davies clip/Ray Davies film. Doug hadn't actually seen the clips, he'd read about them in the NME the following week. They described that Dave had been incorrectly introduced as Ray Davies and that there had been a film directed by Ray shown before Dave's appearance.
The hunt continues...

Another suggestion for the Kal music event:
John Kongos performing 'Tokoloshe Man' (in the LWT show 'Top Twenty Special' (20/11/71).

WEAPON OF PEACE - Look! Hear! We were wondering whether anybody out there has a copy of our appearance on Look! Hear! - March 31st 1981. None of the band have a copy of this broadcast, and we would love to see it again after nearly 30 years. Any assistance you can give us would be very much appreciated. Many thanks Mick, Clyde and Clive (Weapon Of Peace)

Many thanks Mick, Clyde and Clive (Weapon Of Peace) The Look Hear show appears now to be all intact in the archives. The good news is, as a performer you are entitled to a copy. The bad news is, the BBC with probably charge you a couple of hundred pounds for the privilege of your very own DVD. If you want to go the BBC route , you need to contact their 'contributor access' department which at last recall was in their Glasgow office . but its on the web somewhere hope that helps?
