The BBC retains VT links for early editions and out takes c. 1973 which would be interesting to see. There is also a selection of complete show telerecordings; the first 9 I believe BBCs Andrew Martin said; 20 from 1970 plus one from around March 1971.

This turned up on BBC2 last night.
A much broader selection of material than the 1991 - 92 Lime Grove day.
It now seems the apparent studio pilot with the Shakespere muck about was actually the first of the 9 pilot shows transmitted to test the facilities!
There was some use of the existing complete T-Rs. To my knowledge there are no T-Rs later than 71; so the updated NW logo edition clip with Bob Wellings must have been the existing Mar 71 T-R.
I noted a film with presenter in what looked like a minicab which I think is 69 - 70. The caption was an electronic vision mix so this was obviously from a T-R of the actual show not a film insert.
There was the panto horse film from 69 which I hadn't seen before. Boozy the snail turned up on colour VT.
Seemed to be quite a selection of off air VTs which looked like 71 - 73 shibaden recordings and the 1975 off air colour VTs which I think were not broadcast quality tape.

I thought the brief clip of Simon and Garfunkel was from a home video recording. I do seem recall it was a difficult interview for Frank Bough with a lot of tension between the two performers.

I watched it on bbc4 last week and thought it was a brilliant doc with lots of archive footage and clips - was interested to see people like John Craven and Mike Neville in the pilot clips... and i forgot that Sue Lawley used to look so cute in the early 70s!!!! Would love to see a Nationwide night where they maybe plummet the archive for interviews and get in some of the original presenters to introduce them, I'm sure Michael Barratt, Sue lawley, Frank Bough, Esther rantzen and Richard stilgoe could be tempted back, as well as some of the other participants...

That would be nice, I agree Andy. But Barratt and Bough must be knocking on now. Havent seen sight or sound of these once great presenters for MANY years. Wasnt Frank Bough involved ( alleged to be anyway ) in a controversial kinky party some years back. Nothing that a lot of folk havent done in their time, probably me included, but yet, poor Frank got slated I seem to remember. I liked Bough, very competent presenter who knew his job inside out, especially on the saturday ritual, Grandstand. Who would be a TV Personality eh !!

Nothing that a lot of folk havent done in their time, probably me included, Bloody Hell! Do tell us of your time snorting narcotics, wearing suspenders and going to S and M clubs! From wikipedia Bough had a colourful private life which involved taking cocaine and wearing lingerie at sex parties.[1] The cocaine allegations almost ended his television career, although he did briefly return to present ITV's coverage of the 1991 Rugby World Cup. He also made headlines in 1992, when his visits to an S&M prostitute's Welbeck Street flat were made known to the tabloid press by one of the women regularly employed there as a receptionist.[2

What happened to Frank Bough saddens me because since then, there have been a hell of a lot of celebrities caught doing worse things but we still have to suffer THEM. Bough literally vanished as if he was banished from TV altogether. Just annoys me that Bough - a likeable and iconic figure - had his career destroyed but other less interesting and less deserving "celebrities" simply basked in the publicity and did better as a result.

Wouldnt call him a full blown transvestite, probably just got carried away at a kinky party one night, and stuck a basque on whilst having a snort. Coke is supposed to make the user lose their inhibitions. He got caught, and sadly, has probably regretted it for the rest of his life. I remember VIZ getting hold of it. That was an honour for him. As has been mentioned earlier, theres a lot worse going on now with todays "five minute celebrities" It seems to help todays stars with their careers. Mind you, leeches like Max Clifford werent around back then !! I, personally, never thought he was a creep, not compared to guys like Angus Deayton, Barrymore and Mr Norton. I know who I enjoyed watching more on the TV. If Bough had been 25 years younger, wore some nicks, and had a snort in todays society............he would probably have been given the job of presenting the National Lottery. Good old Frank, if you are reading this Mate, can I have your autograph. If you havent got any paper, just write your name on a pair of your panties !!

I think a whole section of the general public who grew up watching Frank Bough saw him as a bit of a genial uncle who gave us the football results on Saturday night then aloud us to join him and his wife go on a caravaning holiday. He appeared just like the rest us. Unfortunatly a bit like any ex-Blue Peter presenter he was was not entitled to have human weakness's. So the betrayal of trust appeared greater.

Yes that's true.
I was surprised that Mike Barratt must have left quite early before the end as NATIONWIDE ON THE ROAD was I think 1976?
It would be nice to know if they ever managed to transfer any more of the off air Shibadens 1971 - 73. There did seem to be some material on this documentary that was not available before that could have been from that resource. I was hoping it might include the edition where in the ghost report series Sue Lawley played back an audio tape reputedly of the spirit of an old lady. This apparition had apparently walked from a wardrobe and hovered over a babys cot. The sound had her making 'coojie coo' sounds to the baby and I recall the presenter looking unsettled.
It was a studio item preceded by the warning 'some viewers may find the next report disturbing'.
