Well done on a nice find. Sadly the Beeb won't be interested. Pop music is fluff to them and unless it's a lost play by the like of Pinter or stuff that could make some money from, they ain't interested! I often listen to mp3 of potp when doing the housework. I never get tired of them. Your best bet is to convert them and swap with fellow enthusiasts.

A quick update,i have recorded the second of the shows, the one i hadn't listened to all he way through,it is not a full show, there is most of Unit 2 and the whole of Units 3 & 4.I think the chart is from the week ending the 19th of May 1962,with "Good Luck Charm" at Number 1,up from No. 7, for the first week.I have a part recording of the chart for the week ending the 26th of May 1962 and Elvis is at No. 1 for the second week.If i have got this wrong please let me know !

If i was you i would get it transfered to WAV format at 48Hrtz. Dont transfer it to MP3 as this will create a bad sounding recording. Is there a Radio institution like the BFI who would take these things? What about Mssing Believed Wiped? They might find it nice to let people have a little listen at there next events

I don't know what the official BBC archive status is of the Light Programme and successor BBC Radio 1 editions of Pick of the Pops and its replacements The Top 20 then The Top 40 but I'd imagine that many of these will have been wiped and most likely the private recordings you have of Alan Freeman will be collectors' items. Alan was a brilliant broadcaster and you've found some real gems there!

I was lucky enough to get several POTP (Fluff versions) from the late sixties in a batch of reel to reel tapes on eBay several years ago (plus some from a work colleague) all from 1967 - 1973. Does anyone know of a way of accurately dating the shows?. Obviously you can get a rough idea from the records played, just wondering if anyone knows of a site that goes into detail.

Up until 1969 BBC used their own charts but its pure guess work really finding the correct dates. I have a June 64 POTP Unit 4 only just really found out the correct date.

If they are the same charts that TOTP used up to early 1969 I may be able to help with this.

Hello,
I am a researcher working on a BBC Four television documentary '60 Years of the UK Singles Chart', which is due to be broadcast in November to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the chart. A major focus of our programme is on how the charts were disseminated, and radio programmes such as 'Pick of the Pops' played a very significant role in this. I am trying to locate a copy of the first ever 'Pick of the Pops' programme broadcast by Alan Freeman in September 1961. I am also trying to locate a copy of Alan Freeman's 'Pick of the Pops' broadcast in the first week of March 1967 when Englebert Humperdink's 'Release Me' beat The Beatles 'Penny Lane / Strawberry Fields' to the number 1 spot. Neither of these episodes remain in the BBC archive. Has anyone heard these recordings before, or do you know where I might be able to obtain a copy. I would be very interested to talk to anyone who could help with this, or anyone who could potentially supply other early recordings of Pick of the Pops from 1961 / 1962.
My email address is david.maguire@bbc.co.uk.
It would very good to hear from anyone who could advise with this search.
Many Thanks.
David

sadly none of the key episodes, mostly I have a near-complete Fluff show from summer 1972, and quite a few chart end of show rundowns dating from 1971 onwards by Fluff, and others, including one with hilarious links by the now-forgotten succesor to Fluff on the chart show after he'd had a bit too much xmas drink 1972, Tom Browne. He started going about Pans People lustily dancing to Jean Genie on TOTP, "oh I nearly had a seizure" Funny:)
