You may be right, but it IS a possibility! I mean, who would have suspected we would have a complete run of steptoes in the video stores?!?! OK there werent as many missing, and I very much doubt we will ever have a complete run of dr who, but I instinctively feel that there is a lot more material out there that will be returned one day. I reckon as many as 40 episodes upwards.

I would be very surprised if there wasn't at least 1 missing episode or at least clips, on home video

The trick is finding one on a tape that is still playable...

This is a fact for sure Bevan, so the pressure is on right minded people who will return missing material to the public domain to search harder than ever before, so that any home recordings from the 60s dont turn to mush! If only the BBC would put a 30 second add on after eastenders. Im not going to start swearing

There are 108 episodes that are totally missing (i.e. that they don't have any short clips existing from that episode). The little sequences when someone at home simply stuck a film camera to the screen, causing the picture to be very flickery does not count as "official" clips & so the episodes that these belong to are still "missing" officially.

Even if you don't count the off-the-screen cine clips (and we really can't afford to be picky when that's all we have from stories such as The Savages), there are 'proper' (if you like) clips extant from many of the 108, notably a large chunk of an episode of Galaxy Four, famous sequences from The Power of the Daleks – a story with no archived episodes – and so on. Obviously finding entire missing episodes is everyone's desire and the missing total is sadly 108 programmes, but every clip is valuable and it is heartening that a piece of the aforementioned Power has turned up even since the comprehensive Lost in Time collection of 'everything in the archive' was released.
I am personally very excited by this thread as I had not previously realised that there were home video recorders in the b/w era of Who. It means there really is a (small) possibility that the last Troughton series' missing episodes (seven of the 108 total I believe) could show up in this format. Possibly I didn't realise because we didn't get a VCR in our house till my Dad bought a Betamax in 1986... ;-]

Re home recordings, there's a slim chance that someone taped episodes from Troughton's last season (other than 'Space Pirates' part two). As I understand it, there were very few domestic video recorders in circulation prior to 1968/69. Also, the high cost of tape meant people tended to erase recordings on a regular basis. 'Invasion' 1 & 4 and 'Space Pirates' 1, 3-6 might reappear in this format. I don't think we'll see home recordings of episodes from earlier seasons. Its been done, I belive one old gentleman recorded an episode of the Space Pirates of the TV. Unfortunatly when Steve Roberts viewed it it turned out to be episode 2.

Just wondering how many episodes are still out there I think perhaps two or three anyone for any more. I think we can get the number down to the 90's.

Perhaps my guess at two or three was a little low thinking about it now I do believe that the number should be a bit higher thanks everyone for changing my mind.

I always say and think "there are about 6 out there" which is me being positive and really wishing it.
I'm intrigued to know where folk think that 40 or so will come back from considering only 2 episodes have been returned since 1992.
Believe me I would love all 108 back, but just wonder where everyone thinks 40 or so episodes are held?

The words 'private collectors' are a contraversial concatenation for sure but there is something for you to think about. There is also the possibility that stuff may still be lurking in foreign archives. Festering in weird places, forgoten. Taken home from 'skips' for the sake of it. (how many people know someone who has taken stuff home from work?) Sixties video and super 8. The possibilities are limitless and its not like every inch of the planet has been scoured, there are still plenty places they could be sitting, the documentation simply doesnt exist in a lot of cases to offer any answers. There are many question marks. This in itself isnt proof that 'x' exists, but it gives the chance of survival. But yeah, it is my personal conviction that there is still a fair bit of material out there and a breakthrough may be made at anytime, especially when we least expect it, when the naysayers are at their most adamant

I think if any are going to turn up it will be this year as there does seem more focus (good and bad) on missing episodes than at anytime before.
However 40 or more does seem stretching. But yes if Hong Kong or Malta announced tomorrow that they had found 40 episodes coming back to us I would be ecstatic.
I think a few though is more likely.
