Hello All,
While we are waiting to see if Ian and Paul Vanezis can uncover any missing who's there is a question I want to ask everybody. I have heard rumors here and there about the possibility of forgotten television archives existing. Is this a possibility that there are indeed forgotten archives in Britain, or would these be foreign archives most likely? I would of thought that a big organization like the BBC would keep records ( even though it was quite some time ago) about their archives, and their holdings. If anyone has any thoughts or info please feel free to leave a post.
Thanks, Lance.

You're not talking about the "film cans being stored in disused Underground stations" are you? I dunno what happened about that story...

No I am not talking about the film cans in the underground ( If there were some it would be ironic if they were the Web Of Fear ). I am talking about a story that someone mentioned on this board a while ago about there possibly being some forgotten BBC archives. I am just trying to see if there is any truth to this story, or if it was just a load of rubbish. And, if it was not a load of rubbish how would you go about researching for a forgotten archive?

If there are corners of the BBC containing forgotten rooms containing film cans, I can't imagine them being of any great size. Maybe, in a provincial BBC building, there's a room full of junk that no-one's been through in years. And just maybe, at the back there's a pile of film cans. And just maybe there's a missing episode in amongst them... "Aye, the basement; no-one's been down there fer years. They say it's 'aunted..."

The wording of the above post would suggest otherwise - did it go dead? Did you hand it over to Ian?

No, I am still following my lead with Ian. This is just another Idea I had recently, and wanted to get some input from the community here. I am always on the lookout for possible leads and rumors.

Interesting sidebar: A newspaper in Alabama just printed some never before seen photos made during the Civil Rights Movement that were found in a closet or something like that. I debated doing an "Off Topic, But Interesting and Hopeful" on it, but I couldn't get to the actual site with the photos from the Yahoo. Story.

Lance If it's called an archive, it's hardly going to be forgotten, is it!?! I can't imagine that the BBC has any hidden cupboards filled withold films. I'm sure that in the last 20+ years the many Doctor Who fans who have worked for the Beeb have searched every nook and cranny of TV centre and all the Beeb's external sites. Jon

Probably right Jon, and when I said "archive" it was meant in a term for a film storage location ( TV station, ect.. ).
Ash: What did you mean by provincial BBC building? Were there such buildings in the provinces of the UK ? Just currious.

I think Ash was using it as hyperbole, rather than referring to a specific building.

Indeed; not a specific building at all. The BBC has premises all over the country; all the major cities have BBC buildings, some of the larger towns do. Maybe, back in the day, a producer in one of the local BBC outposts wanted a Dr Who clip to illustrate a news story - maybe Pat Troughton was opening a fete - and was sent a film of an episode, which got put to one side, and... well... ...you never can tell. One thing I am sure of, though; all the proper archive buildings/rooms have certainly been checked.

how would someone go about looking, forgotten means no one would know. Would it mean checking old paperwork? it sounds difficult but worth a try.

"hidden", I guess would be a more appropriate word then.

Paperwork wouldn't be able to say "look in the bottom shelf of the cupboard at the end of the really long corridor on the top floor. Pick up the green files and underneath is..." There's so many ifs and maybes involved...
