Most likely story to be found?

Just wondering which episode or story, if any is more likely to be found than any other. Like stories that were sold to many countries.
Evil and power of the daleks cannot really be lost forever, can they?

I would guess Marco Polo as it appears to have had the healthiest overseas saless over the other missing stories even if some of the films were forwarded between countries.

Least likely is, of course, Mission to the Unknown and The Daleks' Master Plan and I think we already know that three out of thirteen episodes have been recovered, so it's really impossible to say. All the Marco Polo films might have been destroyed (I think it was sold to nineteen countries), whilst The Tenth Planet (which, I think, was sold to only four countries) might be sitting in an archive somewhere right now. I think it's impossible to say which episodes are most likely to turn up.

I'm curious to see what shows up, but i'm a tad bit skeptical of the results. I suspect this will either be a retcon or an purely audio recording. Either that, or a trojan horse full of virus. So be careful.

"Battle of Godfrey's Cottage" is no longer missing. The radio version of "Loneliness..." is on the DVD - I'd be very surprised if the download is anything else. Ditto "Mission to the Unknown" (albeit it'll be the, perhaps un-commentated, tv soundtrack).

It's highly unlikely that anything from cult missing series will turn up on P2P programs. Apart from being extremely unlikely anyway, someone would have already found it. However, I know for a fact that missing footage from other series does appear on P2P programs, but it's generally things that the BBC aren't interested in recovering (such as Top of the Pops), so sharing it on P2P programs enables enthusiasts to see it regardless.

Both were apparently stolen.

Reign Of Terror 4,5, Ice warriors 2,3, Invasion 1, 4 are also
likely IMHO because it doesn't really make sense to me that
the BBc would destroy part of a story and leave the majority
intact. I may well be wrong. Never understood why they only
threw out two Invasion episodes.

I would say, based on a hunch, that the most likely ones to be located
are Marco Polo (simply cos it was sold to so many places) and the
two Troughton Dalek stories. I reckon this because someone who
wants to half-inch the tapes or films would spot 'Daleks' on the label
and think "Oooh, Daleks". And then nic k 'em. Whereas a label saying
The Macra Terror or The Space Pirates would probably not make
someone as excited.

There is no real reason to believe that the episodes were stolen. The Tenth Planet #4 would have just gone back to BBC Enterprises (from whence it came) and indeed, all four episodes were still being offered for overseas sale by Enterprises a year later. So the fact that it's missing now doesn't mean that it went missing then! ;D

Certainly the film print of The Daleks' Master Plan #4 didn't make it back to the BBC Film Library so the fate of that reel of 16mm is a little more obscure, although it's quite possibile that it was simply sent back to Enterprises along with The Tenth Planet #4 and there it stayed until they disposed of it.

You have to remember that the all four of the remaining episodes of The Reign of Terror come from Cyprus (another copy of Episode 6 having been recovered a few months earlier) and their television service keeps fairly meticulous documentation. So it's almost 100% certain that the remaining two episodes were in the storage building that was destroyed during the violence there back in the 1970s.

It's also fairly clear that material wasn't always disposed of in the most logical way (i.e. one complete story followed by another). Quite often only certain episodes were junked whilst other ones remained on the shelves. You certainly see this a far as the wiping of the original videotapes is concerned, for instance there's two years difference between the VT junking dates of The Daleks #5 and #6.

The Invasion is silghtly odder. The archive listing drawn up for Whose Doctor Who in November 1976 indicates that Enterprises was holding Episodes 1-4, 7 & 8. If this is true, it means that two episodes that don't exists today (1 & 4) were around in 1976, whilst two that we do have (5 & 6) were apparantly missing when the list was made. That said, it's quite possible that a mistake was made with regards to the contents of the six cans of film at Enterprises when the list was made.

I would say, based on a hunch, that the most likely ones to be located are Marco Polo (simply cos it was sold to so many places) and the two Troughton Dalek stories.

Marco Polo did indeed sell to many countries (19 at the current count), but that doesn't necessarily mean that there were loads of copies floating around the globe. All the sales could have been achieved with a tiny handful of prints if they were bicycled around from one country to another, which we know certainly happened with this story. The two Troughton Dalek stories on the other hand sold very poorly, only to three and four countries respectively, so the chances of any further episodes turning up must be very slim.

If anything is out there in foriegn archives, I'm sure Paul and Ian will sniff them out! ;D
