Great find. Appears to be a single VHS sourced clip judging by the start & end of the clip though. Also Hermans Hermits www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6hfp0hmUAcIs this the same app that totp2 showed?

There is one small discrepancy I noticed in the clip and the posted pic from the Herman's Hermits set. On the Kinks clip to the left of the stage there is the swirling light effect, that can be seen throught the clip. On the Herman Hermits set photo, no apparent room is seen for this light effect ? Or did they just move a screen on wheels into the path of the BBC used light projector ? I am just currious since it seems the only thing that is out of place in the Kinks clip and the photo. A great pice of footage, have never seen that one before, love the Kinks and hope more material like this turns up.
Cheers, Lance.

I've always wondered what the source of this isolated Kinks clip from the famous Beatles Paperback Writer edition is, since this edition has long been rumoured to exist in it's entirety. Why is this one clip at large, and sourced from a VHS? Is that proof that it was copied relatively recently? And where from? The entire episode?

Nice to see the John Dalton line up, him fresh I believe from the Mark Four who meanwhile were metamorphosising into the mighty Creation!

A brilliant find and indeed great to see some footage of John Daltons first time round in the band since I hadn't seen any such footage before.
Checking Doug Hinmans Kinks day by day book reveals some interesting info.
Pete Quaifes accident occurred on June 3rd. The Kinks honoured appearances on Thank Your Lucky Stars (5th June) and "A Whole Scene Going" (8th June) as a trio. John Dalton was hired on the afternoon of June 9th and was on live TV that very night on TOTP performing "Sunny Afternoon". Theres a well known tale about Dalton having to squeeze into Quaifes' clothes for that appearance. I have seen a few photos of Dalton in that white jumper from this era so, this YouTube clip I think rules out it being the 9th June appearance if the tale about Quaifes clothes is true... both Ray and Dave Davies have told that story independently in their autobiographies.
The book has a simple entry for June 23rd. The next day they were on Ready Steady Go.
On 7th July, the song was number one and interestingly Quaife was present but Dalton appeared onscreen. It was announced on this day that Quaife would return full time to the band on July 14th. On that date the 7th July clip was repeated on TOTP. As it was Pete did not return to the band and his departure was officially announced on September 13th making Dalton an official member. The reasons for this was that Quaife was undecided as to his entire future having gotten seriously involved with a Danish girl and during this time he even moved to Denmark for a while. Ray Davies went on a bit about Quaifes' indecisiveness in his book "X-Ray".
Eventually Pete Quaife officially returned to The Kinks on 14th November the very day they shot the promo film for "Dead End Street" which was intended for TOTP. The BBC banned it and they eventually performed that song on 8th December. For John Dalton this was a crushing blow and he was forced to return to a job on a building site. He wasn't to return until early 1969 and was to remain until October 1976.
There is no record in the book about the Christmas 1966 TOTP show so indeed it featured a repeat performance. The Beatles appearance from their famous appearance was repeated in one of the Christmas shows so its likely The Kinks performance was lifted from the same June 23rd show which of course has been rumoured to exist for many years.
So... to conclude this clip we have here comes from either 23rd June or 7th July. Either way, its great to see it. Interesting to see TOTP was using that picture within a picture gimmick as early as mid 1966! A vital find!
Lets hope it is the famous June 23rd show and that we may see more of it very soon. Also on that show were The Yardbirds performing "Over Under Sideways Down" and The Hollies "Bus Stop" which would be great to see as well.
However this clip at the very end fades into white and we hear two drum notes that hint at The Rolling Stones "Get Off My Cloud" so whether its a copy from the complete show or a compilation remains to be seen.

The Kinks clip (of which a still is posted above) has been known to be around in VHS quality for many years. It was even screened at an early Missing Believed Wiped in the '90s. Presumably a better print of it (even the whole edition?) is out there.
