It's not unknown I'm afraid. I know someone who was producing a doco a few years ago who wanted to use some clips from some shows from a major archive (won't say which one but the broadcaster's name began with 'T' and the owners start with 'F') and apparently they just gave him the master and said "just let us have it back when you're finished with it".

This is the sort of thing which makes you raise your eyes to the ceiling in exasperation at the BBC! I seriously worry about their care of valuable archive material if they loan out masters with no back-up to fall back on in worst case scenario! I mean SERIOUSLY.

That Ramones DVD I was talking about came out in 2007 so it would be interesting to know if 'Mama's Boy' from OGWT (26/2/85) has been returned in the five years since it was loaned out? Can anyone check with the BBC to see if indeed it is back in the archives?

The fact that even the esteemed curators of his boxset were able to obtain this material is NOT reassuring!
