The oxide there is Fe2O3 - if those are video tapes, they're going to look like sh*t.

What i find strange is, Why aren't the BBC or Granada interested in this auction?. I think their (BBC's) interest in TOTP isn't that great. They have never bothered to get the 30 or so TOTP performances from ZDF's "Disco" back for the F&VTL. There are other ones too on "Hits A Gogo".

I have limited funds but I'd be willing to add some money to the fund if it meant we would get to see these recordings. Same here...

I'm afraid that the idea of combining funds is good in principle but rarely works in practice. To get all the money to me within 7 days of the auction finishing to pay out to the guy will be very difficult. But thank you for the offers.
And if someone in Holland wants to pay £8000 for these tapes then there is nothing I can do to stop them, coz no one in their right mind would pay £8000 for a load of tapes that a) might be wiped blank b) might be unplayable after all these years c) may not have any equipment to play them even if they buy them.

True...But best of luck anyway..Will be watching the final stages like a hawk..(my main interest is Queens performance of "Now i'm here" on tape 40...I don't think (please correct me if i'm wrong), that this has ever turned up anywhere) PS...I'm in for the lottery on Wednesday, so keep your fingers crossed for me!..If i win, i'll buy them & donate them to you ;D

The five 'It's Cliff Richard' shows interest me - nothing at all survives from this 1972 series. It appears that the owner may have recorded just edited highlights. Olivia Newton John appeared in 4 of these shows -although her name does not appear in the cover descriptions. Elton John was another guest - and it mentions that just an extract from his performance was recorded here.

My offer was based on sending you the money like that. It's instant, not based on bullsh*t promises.

Id pay by Paypal too... any others willing to lend support paying by Paypal? Shame youre declining our offers as that extra pot of money will be more strength to your elbow in the closing seconds. Not being rude but if your sticking to a £500 maximum bid we wont even be in the running. I understand your circumspect attitude but i really dont want to see this one escape and disappear forever.

This may sound daft, but has anyone from the BBC contacted this guy and asked if they could borrow the tapes for a few days to try to make copies...
If he declines a polite request, there's always the possibility of pointing out to him that unlike film prints - off air video recordings cannot be legally sold on ebay.... (Not that I'm suggesting quashing his auction, but it is a valid point).

Laurence theres a buzz and excitement here not seen in a long time which you can no doubt detect. Can you assure us that there is a master plan going on here behind the scenes to win this auction which for strategic reasons you cannot reveal here? The rest of us are doing our part by agreeing not to bid, but i get the feeling that Kal are looking at a ceiling of £500-600 and anything above we can forget about it. Are there things going on that we, the great unwashed, dont know about? Some insight or reassurance would be appreciated.

No master plan that I know of! A bid is being made for the tapes is all I know. Let's just keep our fingers crossed it succeeds...
