IIRC the Dec73 version is a rather flat 70s sounding version , so the orginal (whether mimed or not) would be a great addition I would have thought ?

I would get intouch with the restoration team. They would be able to check to see if this is indeed missing from the archives. It looks like the real mccoy. However the seller only has a few posts of feedback, so who knows. I would try that.

If a copy was sent to the band's management it makes you wonder how many other clips were sent to managers/artists. Presumably it wasn't done as a matter of course, but maybe on request ?

On the same subject I discovered on www.youtube.com, the Kinks performing "Autumn Almanac" supposedly from TOTP, although the actual clip comes from a 60's music compilation. I had a problem in playing the clip as it kept freezing but I'm 99% certain that it comes originally from TOTP, given the stage, background, audience, etc. Again, this clip is shown as missing from the TOTP archives. Also on the same site, there is a clip of Queen performing "Seven Seas of Rhye" again, it states, from TOTP. If you key in "Top of the Pops" on youtube, there are nearly 700 clips and although I haven't gone through all of them as yet, they may be further gems to be discovered.

If a video on youtube keeps freezing it just means it's playing faster than it's downloading-so press pause for a couple of minutes while it downloads and it should play ok. If you search for Autumn Almanac without the words Top of the pops that clip has been posted by two other people, and those seem to download much faster. I seem to remember this clip has been confirmed before as being from TOTP but isn't in the BBC archives ?

Performed on the following dates:
20 Apr 67 4 May 67 11 May 67 18 May 67 25 May 67 1 June 67 25 Dec 67 27 Dec 73
Off the top of my head they did it on Pop Goes the 60's.
If it is not from PGTS or 27 Dec 73 that would be brilliant!

Autumn Almanac on TOTP is a known missing (from BBC archives) clip that has appeared on VHS and DVD compilations in the past. The clip seems to reside in a European archive. As to why the BBC don't retrieve it - who knows? There are lots of other similar TOTP clips out there too that they don't seem interested in either. Silence Is Golden was performed on Pop Goes The Sixties too; this is a more authentic clip than the '73 version as it's nearer to the original time period it was a hit. There is a Beat Club appearance from '67 for the song though (which is b/w).

If you read the ebay entry it says that he thinks it may be the whole edition of TOP OF THE POPS - which if it were the 20th April 67 then it should also include Jimi Hendrix, Manfred Mann,Jeff Beck and the Move amongst others! Interesting!

This seems like potentially an important item... is there some kind of planned attempt to bid for this one to get it back to the BBC? I only ask cos I'd hate to see people in a competition to outbid others unaware that they're all trying to achieve the same thing.

Before you start bidding on it, I would check with Andrew Martin at the BBC archives (he posts here occasionally as well). He should be able to tell you if it's potentially missing or not...

I guess the problem is that (and I'm taking the item description at face value; which may or may not be a good idea) the seller is not able to verify exactly what date this is from, or anything else much about the contents. So it may be impossible to know for sure whether this contains anything missing or not before the end of the auction. In which case it becomes a question of whether the possibility that it might contain missing material is reason enough to secure it, bearing in mind that if it's sold to someone else then it may be too late to locate it again to verify what exactly *is* on it.

Interesting! Or if it was the 4th May it would include Hendrix, the Kinks (Waterloo Sunset!), The Monkees, The Move and The Who (Pictures of Lily) I daren't even look up any of those other dates listed...

Looking at the 16mm can, it's almost certainly a 400-500 foot size. The film inside only takes up about half of that which means 200-250 feet at best. Divide by 36 and you get 6-7 mins. Some of that will probably be leader which means that if the presenter's intro is included, it won't be more than one song most likely. I think you can disregard the other artists appearing scenario.
I love the way the seller says "One request - when the successful buyer converts the tape, could I get a copy so that I can see what I have owned for all these years? That would be greatly appreciated". Bugger off you cheap b*stard - get it done yourself! Asking for money for his item then asking for a freebie to go with it afterwards! A bit rich isn't it?
Surely the person can open the film up and unroll it a bit to see if it's a promo or a studio-produced film. I don't think you can believe with any great confidence anything that the vendor says when he keeps mentioning "tape" and then speculates that the rest of the episode may be in there too. Bollocks. Judging by the writing and the BBC sticker it's a small film can - the smallest 16mm tuscan film can you can get.
Anyone who bids on this should expect one clip only. Hope this helps! LD
