Compiling a list of all known TOTP audios (of otherwise missing editions) was suggested as a worthwhile idea, so i'm starting things off. I've gathered the following posts / information from various threads started since 2003 (the point at which the site started to retain it's data) and i've credited the original poster; the info is spread across many many threads and so it would be good to have it all concisely in one place. I may have missed some though.
I also recall that prior to this, pop writer / researcher Keith Badman posted details here of some audios which he had / located identified, some of which I believe the BBC took copies of. Unfortunately this info "fell off the end" eventually and doesn't seem to have been retained. If anyone kept those details perhaps you can re-post them here? Let's see if we can also keep this thread on topic and only post hard info on the subject to hand (WHAT a hope, I know!)
Anyway, if you have recordings yourself, maybe you'd like to post details here (clips or whole shows) to add to what I hope will build to a comprehensive listing. Over to you...

David Bowie - Jean Genie TOTP audio recording:
Just found this on the Web:- a recording of David's performance from the 4/1/73 edition;
The audio is not particularly good quality but perfectly listenable:
There was some speculation that the performance was from the 28/12/72 edition (see attached):
Neil Barker

I only have the 20/2/72 POTP`s with DJ links for the top 5 only, courtesy of my bro-in-law. That`s the only POTP`s i found on all 4 of his 4-track reel to reel tapes.
Jonathan Wood
Is this for sure, the 25th February 1971 episode? This is interesting as you all probably know that the archive master of that edition has mute links. If the recording is of sufficient quality (direct feed or microphone?) this could possibly be used to patch-up the episode. Please contact me via email at the BBC. Usual organisation format. i.e. forename.surname at etc.
Keith Brockway
Hi Jonathan, when i first got this edition 3 months ago it seemed like the full edition minus the first part as it kicks in at the beginning of Ray Stevens "Can We Get To That?" and seemed to be the full edition with all Jimmy Saville`s links intact, but on further investigation, like checking the Database, Atomic Rooster`s "Tomorrow Night" is missing from the recording and as the rest of the edition seems to flow to order, i would guess that my Brother-in-Law missed out the first few minutes, ie: the chart rundown and the first song at the time. As with the 4/3/71 edition having "Up Pompeii" by Frankie Howard missing would seem to indicate a degree of editing at the time, that 35 years on, my brother-in-Law just can`t remember. I still have the r2r tapes and are hoping in the near future to transfer to cassette so Neil & Pete from my regular site can have copies as well as keeping one for myself. Sorry for implying it was 100% intact when in theory it is only 95% intact.
Jonathan Wood
Even though the database lists Atomic Rooster for that edition their performance is not on the master recording for that show anyway - don't know why. All bar the first couple of links is better than nothing, but it's up to you. We can of course handle 1/4" reel to reel tape.

Not sure how interesting this is as I've just stumbled across this board by chance but I have a reel-to-reel tape recorder which I have just re-aquired from my Dad which has a collection of about 60 or 70 reels. I know there are plenty of recordings I made myself as a child, mostly 1978/79 which contain recordings of Top of the pops episodes, usually the full episodes which If I remember rightly were recorded on a microphone set up near the TV speaker...seem to remember they turned out all right though!
Slightly more interesting is the fact that my Dad was also an avid recorder of Material direct from the telly going right back to, I would guess late 60's/early 70's and I know he taped plenty of music stuff
Are these of any interest? I haven't managed to get the tape recorder working yet and I'm listing these from memory. Don't want to get hopes up too much but I am also convinced there are some very old TOTP episodes in there too. I haven't even checked out some of the other stuff he has kicking about but I know for definite there is a Phillips 2000 Video recorder with at least 2 tapes and a Betamax video (or possibly 2) with many dozens of tapes, (though he used Beta until the mid 80's swearing the quality was better)
Let me know someone if this is worth pursuing...my guess is that is is, even just to satisfy my own curiosity.
Antony.
Sounds like an interesting find, even if only to relive your teenage years.
Any markings on the tapes?
Neil Barker
Yes, this sounds very interesting indeed!
Please keep us posted, Brasseye.

Most of what could be on your dads vt, is no doubt, missing from the beeb archive. It would be brilliant, to see these tapes, if not just for the historical content.

Got the thing working and just finished going through the first reel. I've been on the TOTP website and tried to date the stuff as best I can. stuff with an * before it appears to my ears to be live or in some way different from the recordings I know although I could be wrong on this.

This is one of the smaller reels, It might take me some time but is it worth my while printing out tracklistings like this? If Its boring, please tell me and I'll stop.

The first part of the third reel appears to be two complete episodes of TOTP, those being the episodes from 17th and 24th of August 1973 hosted by Kenny everett and noel edmonds although the running order is completely the opposite to that listed on the totp website. After that is some folk stuff and what appears to be Joan Biaz in concert, then about 15 minutes of Woody Allen in concert which is different from the record and pretty funny (esp the moose sketch). After that, more Totp stuff but without all the between song banter but this is a huge disk and I am only about half way through the first side. Quality on this one is pretty good as it is recorded at a higher speed but my Dad informs me that the tape player is pretty bog standard so on better equipment it may well be a pretty decent and well preserved recording.
The second reel was full of folk music and a concert by some 'comedian' called Blaster Bates!
All this material is audio only I'm afraid. I'll hopefully be starting on the video material fairly soon but as most of it is much later (late 70's onwards) I don't really expect to find too many gems.
Dale Rumbold
Dug out my old reel-to-reel this week : found I had a tape with several 'live' performances from the 3rd January 1974 edition of TOTP, hosted by Dave Lee Travis. This is apparently missing from the archive. Unfortunately, my r2r recorder at that time was a cheapo Audition (Woolworths) one, with variable speed approximating to 1 7/8, so the quality is pretty poor.
An interesting performance of "The show must go on" by Leo Sayer is the highlight, clearly live, and complete with incorrect words on the last chorus. Have copied it to my PC for posterity anyway.
Other tracks are :
Mud - Tiger Feet (the 1st time they performed it on TOTP) ;
Cozy Powell - Dance with the devil ;
Slade - Merry Xmas Everybody ;
part of Roy Wood - Forever ;
Roxy Music - Street Life (to fade out)
As I recall, it was unexpected for the Roxy Music track to be featured at all, since it had gone DOWN that week from #9 to #10, thus defying the usual TOTP policy.

My dad is clearing out his attic (he and mum want to move house) and he found his old reel to reel tape recorder. With it, he found a load of old tapes and he decided to give them a quick listen. He found on one reel a 1964 edition of Top of the Pops and on another a recording of the Rolling Stones at the London Palladium. Are these of any worth? He was about to throw them out but happened to mention them to me and as an occasional visitor to this site thought they might be of value.
The Top of the Pops tape has mostly music with only a few bits of Jimmy Saville's introductions (my dad, then only 14, would stop the tape when he appeared and restarted it when a song began). He hasn't got a clue what year the Palladium recording is from. Also, he said the tapes were not of very good quality as he just used to hold a microphone to the tv, but I pointed out to him that playing them on his ancient crappy reel to reel recorder didn't help and they would perhaps sound better on a professional machine.

I found this reel of not very well recorded top of the pops here is the info:
Top of the Pops 5th June 1975 Presenter Ed Stewart:

Roy Wood Oh What A Shame Performance
Gilbert O'Sullivan I Don't Love You But I Think I Like You 5th June
Judy Collins Send In The Clowns Repeat Performance
Nazareth My White Bicycle Performance
Windsor Davies & Don Estelle Whispering Grass Performance
The tape cuts at the end of Whispering grass
And as it happens the other side of this tape has the following
Top Of the Pops 15th May 1975

No Intro or outro music
Susan Cadogan Hurts So Good
Windsor Davies & Don Estelle Whispering Grass
Tammy Jones Let Me Try Again
