Folks here may be interested in a new book about the Beatles on television, film and video. 'The Beatles: Film & TV Chronicle' covers all known tv programs and footage though the end of 1970, including previously undocumented items. This looks VERY interesting. I wonder if it covers the alleged new discoveries in the Granada archive. I feel an early Christmas present coming on.................

Looks a good un. I wonder how different it will be from Mark Lewishon's excellent tome.
When you talk about the Granada discoveries, what are you referring to?
Is it previously clips that were thought missing that have now been discovered?
Or the compilation doing the rounds with full length clips of Scene at 6:30 with Ken Dodd etc?

I hadn't heard about any new discoveries! Sounds good. Hopefully it'll be previously thought lost footage (e.g. early appearances on People & Places / Scene At 6.30 etc). Oh, if only...

These photo negatives don't look like theyre from RSG... all their live RSG performances exist and look nothing like this. It looks like a lost performance and since it looks like a theatre set up, my money is on the famous Palladium show that started Beatlemania. I could be wrong though! Anyone else have any ideas?

Judging by the guitars, and styles of haircuts it looks like late 1963. Probably October to December

1. Yes, the new Beatles video book will discuss Granada materials.
2. The photos on the eBay auction are from "Sunday Night at the London Palladium" - the drum riser is very distinctive. I believe this is the October 13, 1963 appearance, but need to study a little further.

They wore the grey collarless suits for their first Palladium appearance. The suits and stage setting in these slides look to me like it's their second Palladium appearance on 16/1/64.

I agree--- the eBay captures would appear to be from the Jan 1964 telecast.
What is curious to me is how similar these shots are to the Oct 63 rehearsal pics (and how different they look from the Jan 64 rehearsal shots--- set, riser, etc.)!
There are some nice shots of the Jan 64 rehearsal in the Terrance Spencer book "It Was Thirty Years Ago Today" and also in the online Getty Photo archive.
Getty also has some photos (and a contact sheet) from what I believe is the Oct 63 rehearsal.

After an extensive review of many photos from the Oct 63 and Jan 64 "Sunday Night at the London Palladium" rehearsals/transmissions, I believe the recent eBay photos are from the Oct 63 telecast. The photos of the Beatles wearing their collarless jackets would seem to be promo shots taken on the Palladium stage (perhaps on the day before the Oct 63 telecast). The Jan 64 telecast used a completely different stage design, Starr and Lennon had longer hair, and Harrison had switched from a Gretsch Country Gent to a Tennessean guitar.
I'd be interested in any opinions on this!

I think you are right. In late 1963 Harrison was primarily using a 1962 Gretsch 6122 Country Gentleman w/ a walnut finish. In early 1964 Harrison began using for the most part a 1963 Gretsch 6122 Country Gentleman (a darker finish). This is the guitar that you see pretty much exclusively for the 1964 tours and early 1965. In early to mid 1965 Harrison starts to use a 1963 Gretsch 6119 Tennesean. You see this guitar at the 1965 NME Pollwinners and 1965 US tour. However it should be noted that Harrison got this guitar in late 1963 and it is first spotted at the 1963 Christmas shows, used for the Beatles 2/64 Carnegie Hall show in the U.S., the For Sale shows at the end of 1964 and then primarily in 1965.

One more thing. The Tennesean was a back up for the latter Country Gentleman. For whatever reason, Harrison began to favor it over the Country Gentleman in late 1964.
