Does anyone know where the JJF clip used in The Rock n Roll years 1968 came from..It was b/w and in close up and the boys where not in make-up. I haven't seen it for about a decade and cant remember if they were miming or playing . I'd love to know the sauce of it, maybe they filmed two promos one with make-up and dodgy sun-glasses in colour and one in b/w without. Now I remember a thread about 68 poll winners concert probably not being taped. but I was just wondering if possibly.........

I have that edition of R & R Years so i'll have to dig it out! Offhand, I thought the usual JJF promo was used in it though (as seen in the 6/6/68 TOTP, where the clip is usually sourced from although it was made in colour) the one with Jagger pouting at the camera in warpaint etc and Jones looking like an insect with those impenetrable shades on! Don't think there was another promo made of that song, although it could have been something cobbled together from newsreel footage for that show specifically.

I'd completely forgotten about this clip as it's so long since i've watched the programme! It seems to be another promo of the song, presumably shot at the same time as the more well-known version (as some of the shots of the rest of the band look like they were filmed at the same session as the other promo) but with Jagger in diffreent clothes.

what about the "we love you" trial of Oscar wilde promo, does it exist and is this available anywhere, I think it was banned from totp at the time.

If you've seen the "We Love You" promo, William, it must therefore exist!

All sorts of stuff, but most pertinently here, he directed the (unreleased?) on-the-road documentary covering a 1965 Stones tour, "Charlie Is My Darling."

Oh..and "Tonite Let's All Make Love In London." Bit of a pedigree for class music documentaries has Mr. Whitehead.

“We love you” was shown in its’ entirety on the BBC’s late night “Video jukebox” programme of May 1986, the first hour or so was absolutely spellbinding, I could go as far to say it changed my life (having not been around to witness this stuff at the time). It did feel to me that the late 60s were being written out of history in the early-mid 1980’s by TV and Radio, it was very hard to see or hear anything Rock orientated from that period, so it was a god-send. They showed Eric Burdon’s “When i was young”, which I was also hearing for the first time, they showed “Strawberry fields” & “Penny Lane” in colour, “Lady Jane” was on it, a TOTP film of “Tears of a clown” from 1970, John Peel was co-hosting it, it was just a magical night and then all of a sudden it turned all 1980’s again and the magic was gone.

Yeah it was cool Syd. I still have that tape! One of the earliest in my collection. Wasn't it the first time in years the promos had been shown? I know the Tube did them around the same time.
Rather foolishly I did't tape all the promos. Well we all do silly things as kids!
I can remember a very memorable can can done to the Monster Mash!
It was also my first time I saw Shindig.

I only taped the 3 Beatle promo’s (an out of synch “Hello Goodbye” Pepper suits version being the other). I’m fairly certain “Penny Lane” was shown in colour for the first time ever in UK TV. All were shown complete with no voice over or captions. The other Stones promo I didn’t mention was “Have you seen your mother baby.....” the one where they dressed up as women.
