This is all very fascinating stuff. Thanks for the rundowns, everyone.
Incidentally, the Hey Jude clips: there were several shot but the most commonly seen is an edit of two of them. Presumably the others all exist too, possibly outtakes of Revolution too. According to the Lewisohn book, at the same time as The Beatles recorded the Frost intro, they went into a "shocking parody" of It's Now Or Never - I assume this is still present on the master reel although it doesn't seem to have surfaced!
Same goes for the Ed Sullivan colour clips of Paperback Writer / Rain - several takes were recorded (including, it seems, rehearsal takes), although only one of each has so far surfaced. Presumably they are still on the VT reel. Anyone know more?

There are several outtakes of Rain and paperbackwriter. I believe I have 3-4 takes of each song. The outtakes are all in black and white video. I'll take a look. The quality is very good to excellent on all.
Its now or never (clip from Frost) has been circulating for a long time. The quality is ok. Taken from a faded 16mm print. You see David Frost introduce the beatles and hear in the background the beatles butchering its now or never for about 5-10 seconds. Before the introduction you see the beatles perform an older song (non-beatles) for about 20 seconds (jazz like) and Frost comments "A perfect rendition".

Ah, It's Now Or Never IS available, is it? I didn't know that. I must admit, I don't keep up with all the bootlegs though. Must be on the VT reel in better quality too then.
The "jazz" thing is actually the theme from Frost's TV show, which The Beatles seem to be attempting to learn on the spot as Frost speaks!
It gets better: the VT outtakes of Paperback / Rain are circulating then. There should be a few colour takes too somewhere. They were all shot at the same time. All this material deserves a proper DVD release, with the various outtakes as extras. Why aren't Apple on the ball? They never have been though, mind. They insist on controlling everything themselves when others more objective would give better results - oh, for Network to do the job for them!!

I agree. They filmed some of the promos in color (several takes outside) and videotaped inside in color as well as black and white. There must be some surviving color alternate promos. It would make a great release if Apple ever got on the ball. A best of beatles promos dvd would be great. Quite historic given the fact that the Beatles were probably one of the first groups to regularly shoot promos for later tv promotion.
I've only seen the beatles perform the frost theme on film. There must be a video version.

'Before the introduction you see the Beatles perform an older song (non-beatles) for about 20 seconds (jazz like) and Frost comments "A perfect rendition". ' That IS the Frost theme !!!

Altohugh I haven't checked, I thought the Frost Theme was on video on the official Anthology DVD. And there are two versions of 'Revolution' on this Chronology DVD incidently, both appear very similar - I haven't watched them back to back to spot the differences.

This is becoming very confusing. We know Frost turned up to give his audience the impression that he was getting an exclusive, or that they were primarily performing the numbers for his show. Anthology shows John singing and playing “Here’s a piece of David Frost” and George asks Frost “Is this going out in colour?”, Frost replies something like “No I’m afraid we’re still in black and white at the moment”. I’d presume this sequence, as seen on Anthology at least, is not from the viewpoint of an LWT camera. So was there a LWT camera filming this little section from a different angle on b&w vt?

No, the Frost sequence was actually shot in colour as it was shot with the same cameras that the rest was. Frost said it was b/w with a mind for the LWT viewers who would only be watching in b/w. LWT didn't have separate cameras there or anything- what we see there is what was inserted into the Frost show (the whole show of which doesn't exist, as far as I know; a shame as i'd like to have seen how the items were sandwiched in).
The songs were definitely being shot for Apple's use as promos anyway but Frost - ever the opportunist - thought he'd try and imply a bit of exclusivity by recording an intro on set. The promos were used in various shows, here and abroad, including TOTP (plus the Frost show, of course).

If I recall correctly one of the differences I noticed in the "Hey Jude" clips is at the beginning. One take Paul McCartney is looking directly at the camera, on another take he's looking to the side. Has anyone else spotted any differences in the promos?

They are subtle differences but I would imagine that the camera shots were rehearsed beforehand and so any differences were small and pre-planned. One of the Revolution clips has some different shots of Lennon in the earlier verses, it doesn't go to that tight close-up of his face so soon in the song.

Finally got in the 2 dvd chronology promos. SOme nice stuff on the dvds in exellent to mint quality. Beautiful Rain promo in color! Has the Beatles on Frost complete w/ intro in video! Hello Goodbye (2 versions) is mint. The intertel promos are all mint or near mint. Some footage from 1965 American tour and European tour (pro shot) which I have never seen before. John is wearing a cap in one concert scene. The sound quality is teriffic. All different versions of the Rain and paperback writer promos. I'll post more once I have had the time to go through the dvds. Definitely worth getting.
