Are the Ed Sullivan colour VT clips of Paperback Writer / Rain on there too? I've been wanting pristine copies of these for ages (all that do the rounds are - at best - avarage quality tape copies). A crime they haven't been released officially.
Regarding the Paris concert: I think that was shot on some kind of unusual video format (819 lines or something?) and all that we've seen up till now seem to be poor quality optical conversions - probably the master tape could yield better results if transferred properly. I agree thouhg, Melbourne '64 is the better of the two, possibly one of the best live Beatles live gigs recorded. Those Tokyo concerts were recorded superbly for the time but aren't very wonderful performances generally (although a few of the songs are pretty good), same as with Munich. However, for historical reasons they should be released.

The Ed Sullivan clips are listed as being on Chronology 2 which I haven't got yet - I'll let you know the quality once it arrives.

I'm actually getting in those dvds this week to. From what I hear there are several alternate promos in nice quality. For instance, a color Rain promo shot in John's backyard.
The Paris concert is a weird format. However, On one of the anthology press kits they had smippets of the concert in pretty good quality, video format, but it still looks a little strane. (I don't know if it was because the way it was filmed-always looks like you are looking up to the Beatles)

In John's backyard? Never heard of that one! Keep us posted on it! It amazes me that there are still Beatles things that we never knew about turning up! Mark Lewisohn overlooked THAT one, if it was indeed filmed.

Sounds like somebody has confused John’s “Backyard” with the grounds of Chiswick House. The ‘66 ED Sullivan video’s are among my favourite clips of the Beatles, they look really cool in those Byrds-like shades they are wearing for “Paperback Writer“, particularly John in his Orange rectangulars (and that shirt!). A real shame these weren’t included on the officially released Beatles/Ed Sullivan DVD. The Pepper suits “Hello Goodbye” should also have been included, for this too was an Ed Sullivan exclusive. As for filmed concerts, for me the ‘65 Paris gig towers above all other visually recorded Beatle concerts, it’s about the only show I know of where the audience appear to be into the music rather than just seeing them, it must also be unique in that each number is appreciated by a roar rather than a high pitched scream. For the Japan gigs, Ringo had flu (or a very bad cold), but that doesn’t excuse George’s shocking vocal on “If I needed someone” or those terrible suits, a real shame they were still sticking to the uniform look as late as ‘66, as individuals back stage or in the recording studio they were wearing some really funky gear by this time. Munich 66 looked a really good show, but I think this was only partially videotaped. Love Paul’s bass fills on “Nowhere Man”, happily that was included on Anthology. It would be great if Shea Stadium came out on official DVD with the option of having the original soundtrack without the January 66 re-dubbing of virtually every song.

I have not seen the chronology promos. My friend mentioned Lennon's backyard for Rain. I think you are right about chiswick house..I'll check.
George's vocals were awful. He also royally screws up on I'm Down at the Munich concert. The suits at that concert look okay. My guess is that Brian Epstein, being the prim and proper guy he is, dictated the tour wardrobe; even in 1966. FYI a near broadcast version of this concert has now turned up. That one was a shocker. About 4 years ago I thought I had received the ultimate upgrade (got from friend of guy who purportedly has TOP OF THE POPS 1966 episode with Beatles. He paid $2,000 for his version of special several years ago)) and this baby came along; also included silent color film concert footage of show (pretty cool) and raw silent footage outtakes of what I believe is Essen concert.

Essen, wasn’t John in orange circular shades for that gig? I don’t know why, but I really wish there was a properly filmed concert with them wearing shades, George has some outrageous ones on for the 66 Shea gig, trouble is the performance was probably dire, so maybe it‘s just as well there aren‘t any more recordings from these final tours. Now you mention it, I remember seeing the “I’m down” Munich version, didn’t Paul open it with the wrong verse? They must have performed one good show that year. Virtually all my Beatles bootleg collection was on an old video format, sadly after the recorder packed up I dumped all the tapes when I moved house AGHHHH!!!!!.

Those '66 Ed Sullivan clips are among my favourite Beatle clips too - criminal that Ed's intro to these was used in the Anthology, only to cut straight to the (inferior though still good) Chiswick filmed promos instead of the VT! I wonder how many outtakes exist on that VT reel that have never been seen too?
Makes me all the more mad that a proper and thorough DVD colection of this stuff still hasn't been released.

Excellent thread this.
Staying on The Beatles subject does anyone know if any footage survives of their last appearence on the USA 66 tour at Candlestick Park?
I seem to recall reading somewhere that McCartney had seen some film of this concert and thought it was quite good.

Some footage definitely does exist - not sure how much though. Clips of it were used in the Anthology in the parts relating to that topic in the programme. I have seen brief newsreel type footage (I think mute) and I believe the colour film of them walking to the stage with their instruments in hand, wearing shades and light suits (as in the Anthology) is from Candlestick Park, certainly it's from one of their very last gigs on that tour.
I've not heard about any substantial concert footage though (if this was what you meant) - it would be good if there was some. I understand that Lennon played a few opening bars of In My Life - and then thought better of it - before leaving the stage! What an appropriate ending to that phase of their career it would have been to have gotten a full rendition...

My understanding is that very little footage of candlestick park exists. I've seen newsreel footage og their arrival by plane, brief press conference in fair quality, leaving concert and snippets of them on stage from a long distance. (I think beginning of rock and roll music) Some of this footage was used in the opening sequence of the Complete Beatles back in the early 80s.

Re: Candlestick.
1. There is home movie footage. Colour, but shaky and filmed from the stands. The guy who shot it got to the ground early and filmed the set-up of the stage.
2. There were 2 newsreel teams there that day. One filmed some Vox Pops with the crowd and a little (remote) footage of the Fabs on stage. The second, much clearer and interesting footage of the guys taking to the stage and playing "Rock n Roll Music" and "She's a Woman" ( a tiny section of this footage is on the Anthology)
3. There was no press conference that day, and the only footage that exists prior to the concert, is in newsreel from their arrival at the airport in San Francisco
4. Two retrospectives of the concert surfaced in the States during early 1990's and featured examples of the above.
Hope this is of some use.
(If anyone's interested I have some of the above footage and I'm happy to trade for similar. (simoncatweazle@aol.com)

My Chronology 2 DVD has now arrived. The Ed Sullivan clips for Paperback WRiter And Rain are indeed on it - I have never seen these clips before so I don't know how the quality compares to other versions doing the rounds. I would give the video quality 7/10. On my copy the colour is a bit patchy - but very watchable nonetheless - really interesting to see! Sound is fantastic quality - and hasn't been overdubbed in this case. The Chiswick House promos are on this too in 9/10 quality. Can anybody tell me the story of the 'Hey Jude' promos? DVD 1 has the David Frost -Hey Jude. This one has two different versions - one of which is listed as from The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour but these two appear identical excpet for at the end when the audience come on - thats when it was edited I presume! Just wondering why there are 3 different versions - never knew that before. Anyhow, video quality is generally very very good on this DVD - much better than a multi-generation VHS and the sound quality is top notch. Includes the Hey Bulldog video in great quality too which I love.

I have the Chronology DVD's and it is the best compilation of clips that I've seen so far. There is just the occasional out-of-synch footage and that is ever so slightly out but on the whole the quality is excellent especially on the Intertel made b/w promo's. Before the Beatles made promo films most of the footage comes from Ready Steady Go and the rest are 80's/90's EMI made promos. As for the Ed Sullivan pieces, it's not mint condition or in crisp colour like the anthology material but it's the best that I've seen but I've only one other source to go by.
