Does any of our techie visitors to this website know why some of the DJ links on certain archive editions of TOTP's are mute?
It's something that's always puzzled me.

many postings on this, the simple answer is no we're not sure, probably something to do with seperate tracks for music and studio(was this the case ?) and whoever copied these in the late 60s or early seventies only connected 1 track or disconected the other or something like that, we don't realy know.

was it to do with foreign countries? For example a Totps show might shown in another country with its own presenter, when they faded between presenter and clip the last thing they would want is to pick up Jimmy Saville going "eerh errh aaaarh, hows about that then" or Tony Blackburn saying "what a sensational sound that was"

I think it was due to the foreign sales reason, does anyone know (except Germany) if any other countries took hold of TOTP performances ?

That’s a suspicion that I've always had, but when I raised it last time no one was sure, it’s the answer that makes the most sense, but we really need to ask the "sinnersaint" whoever that is/was

Didn't Radio 1 during the late 60's/70's have a TOTP companion show which played out that weeks hits as performed on the tv show ? This could be a good reason why DJ links were kept mute ?

Although, in general, complete episodes of TOTP were often ditched, recently- uncovered documentation reveals that the show's original producers, Johnny Stewart and Stanley Dorfman, were in the habit of preserving certain performances (albeit mostly in mute form without the DJ links). The recent discovery of two such 'performance-only' clips from the 6th April, 1967 edition fuels belief that further lost 60s performances are waiting to be unearthed. (Paperwork detailing foreign clip sales in 1968 adds to this theory.)

These I think
Following a previously undocumented (and unseen) 16mm Screen Gems promotional film for the Monkees' 'A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You', Manfred Mann mimed to a backing track for 'Ha Ha Said The Clown' with live vocals. Like the Hendrix clip, this performance was also 'telerecorded' upon transmission and thankfully, it too survives. Could the on playful sight of a drumming mechanical monkey on Manfred's organ (ooh-er!) be a slight dig at it's pre-fabricated namesakes' in appearing on the same show? The show ended as it began with Engelbert and 'Release Me', in a clip first broadcast 9th February.
Could they refer to:
Kinks Sunny Afternoon Manfreds Ha Ha Said the Clown Manfreds Semi Detached Suburban Jimi Hendrix Purple Haze Jimi Hendrix Wind Cries Mary
Also maybe the Kinks Wonderboy (Seen a splendid 42 seconds of that!)

do you think the existing clips that the bbc has already recovered are the tip the iceberg?

Not so much an iceberg, more like an ice cube.
TOTP is not sexy. The Beeb isn't really interested.
It would be nice if they:
Did a double dvd with:
The three existing episodes mute links and all The random sixties clips that survive Any 60's audio they could find with Harry Goodwin's stills
The a complete set for 70 onwards.
The Disco clips would then be a bonus dvd.
Sorry have to go. Elvis is just landing in his spaceship.
