This is very much a breakthrough, considering the large amount of re-taped material that usually ends up on old Philips tapes. It wouldn't surprise me that Carlton might refuse these if offered. All it needs is some petty excuse by a scribe on the grounds of them not being of broadcast quality. It might end up being better to offer them to the BFI, who equally might have to copy them as is. I offered the BFI 4/5 of a 1978 music series a few years back. They did a very good good of copying the tapes. In fact, so good that they would have been acceptable for DVD release with a disclaimer about picture quality. At best, they were no worse than a typical S-VHS off-air. It's very obvious how much people posting to this sites enjoy this series. I hope that these tapes do reach that audience. After all, it is quite a while since other discoveries of the same sort 'The Avengers' etc and no sign of commerical releases.

This is really fantastic news. I hope Steve Roberts and the RT read this news and respond to it as the quality could be improved so much by a Doctor Who style restoration. Perhaps Carlton can be shown the VHS of Ambassadors ep.5, just to show what can be achieved. I hope these tapes can be worked on and released. A Vidfire and merging of the t/rs and off-airs would work miracles!

of all the domestic formats i think N1500 still rates as one of the best quality. Lets hope the publicity generated on this find will inspire Carlton into action?

I'm frankly dubious about egyprtian papyrus claims, how long before he claims to have found Wine Of India on an N1500?

Dubs, after reading your comments, I read the thread on the Mausoleum Club Site. I added a reply, which I'll copy here - anyone agree, or will I get flayed for daring to suggest this!!!!
I'll be your kindly Devil's Advocate and after reading this thread for the first time. As all this is very much ‘up in the air’, I’ll make a few observations (adjusts trident in direction of forum….!)
• A Philips N1500 was the price of a small car in todays money. To record Timeslip in 1973, you would need to outlay that cost plus about £300 in todays money for the tapes. Very improbable such early recordings were made or even kept, but not impossible.
• I was told by a Philips collector that there was a back-log in supplying these machines and they were very difficult to obtain for home use until 1974. Again, if Timeslip had been repeated in the late 70s, tape copies would have been more probable.
• Given that these tapes were said to be mostly kept, that's quite a financial outlay for a kids programme. Unless of course, money was no object.
• Spending all that money on early and expensive home video recording and not keeping a record for the price of a biro pen seems a bit odd. The person who owned the reel to reel tapes of the moon landing and dr who had a very label system. I've seen the list and it was meticulous. People who spend money on a new toy generally look after it (especially in the 1970s).
• The description of the tape quality is rather well spread with all the incidental details that you might want to put on if intending to fake. All that detail, but no cataloguing system.
• These days, it doesn't take much effort to put a screen grab on the net. Once done, a lot of conjecture would end. So hopefully you’ll have one up soon and this will all be cleared up.
• So, I'll put on my horns and be Devil's Advocate, Sulphur and all!!!! ;-)

Be very wary of this guy! What you say Andy makes a lot of sense.
A few months ago this joker had a bootleg web site hosted by Freeserve and was trying to flog off timecoded VHS dubs of "Thriller" copied to DVD-R as "official" releases. He also offered other programmes for sale of similar status.
Several times he posted on the "Mausloeum Club" under aliases promoting these illegal ventures, eventually giving up after each was blocked. This "convenient" Timeslip find seems like an attempt at revenge/wind up - whatever, when he thinks memories have faded.
His personal email address (which until today was in his profile at the Mausoleum Club) had the same "Golden-Fleeces" sub-tag of a Freeserve account as his pulled bootleg site. Funny how it has just been removed. I'm sure the moderators have this information still and can check this.
The fact that no Timeslip screen captures have been forthcoming are further indications ... as Andy so rightly points out. It's a nonsense to assume Carlton would even query a temporary JPEG ... I'm sure they'd be far more interested in the offering of ATV copyrighted material for financial gain.
Having received the advice to contact the Who RT team from several posters - I think we can await final confirmation as to whether any such approach is made.
Maybe Freeserve, Carlton, trading standards and others might be interested in this character at some point?

Thanks for your support!! With a bit of luck we'll get someone on here next week with a Telcan recording of 'Thank Your Lucky Stars', which can be restored in stereo sound, due to two displaced reel to reel audio tape recordings which were taken in the studio on that very day ;-)
