Apparently it dropped straight out of the Top 50, which I must admit does seem a bit odd.

records by groups with strong fan bases have always tended to have shorter chart runs in the same way that records which appeal more to the adult buyers (eg Welcome Home, My Way, Spanish Eyes) have had longer ones.) Donny Osmond's drops from Number 1 were larger than the average artist's, so I would expect the BCRS in 76 to disappear quickly.

Dear Jeff OK! Charts (2/1/65 & 31/12/66) will be photo-copied and sent ASAP. If you have a copy of Tony Jaspers top 20 book, you will see Jasper had no trouble publishing the Top 20's of these two charts. It proves just what an awful and shoddy job of work Rice, Rice & Gambaccinni did in missing these charts in their "Guinness" books. Amazingly they completly overlooked over TWO YEARS of the first ever L.P charts that were published in Record Mirror (From 28/7/56 onward) Hope the postal backlog in London is easing. Alan Smith.

Thanks for the photocopies, received ok. Interesting that they do say that the 31/12/66 ones are "provisional, owing to early printing over the Christmas period. The returns were taken from a limited number of retail outlets over the London and Liverpool areas".."However, the charts will resume their full accuracy next week"

Glad charts arrived safely. Most Christmas charts over the Christmas period in the Sixties were "Provisional" Only the Melody Maker missed out Christmas Charts (In 63, 67, 68 & 69) as their sample bieng so large; that to reduce it by so much some years was deemed unreliable. ASM

You're the man who can definitely confirm if "Wild Thing" by the Troggs got to Number One in the Disc charts. The only reason I ask is that a book about pop in the 60s (I can't rememeber its name, but evidently it does contain numerous mistakes) published in the mid 70s gave a list of all the papers' Number Ones (so you could see what did and what didn't make it in each chart), but Wild Thing doesn't appear.

Dear Jeff Yes! Wild Thing DID! hit no1 in Discs top 50. In this chart the Rolling Stones "Paint It Black" only reached no 2 behind "Wild Thing" unlike in NME MM & RR charts where the Stones were no1 and The Troggs only no 2. Would you like a copy of that chart Jeff? ASM

No, but thanks - that's ok I'll take your word! On a separate but slightly related subject, I'm curious if you've enver entered into correspondence with the compiler of the Record Mirror Top 20 booksTony Jasper - (many, many years ago my cousin knew him when both lived in/near Penzance.)

Here again! Forgot to say that the book Jeff mentions that featured the 60's no1's, which was published in the 80's was "Million Sellers Of The Sixties" by Dimitri Coryton. It was a 60's only follow up to Joseph Murrells "Book Of Golden Discs" The Book is very comprehensive - but mistakes sadly do occur. EG as Jeff stated Coryton ommitted "Wild Thing" which WAS a No 1 in DISCS chart. He also put The Bee Gees "I've Gotta Get A Message To You" at No 1 in Melody Makers chart, which is not so, for on that week the Beatles "Hey Jude" was an instant no 1 in MM's chart, thereby halting "Messages" rise to the top there. Also in the text section, the author states that Melody Makers singles chart was the second one after NME's (8/11/52) Again not so! Record Mirror had the second singles chart up and running on 22nd Jan 1955. Melody Makers first published singles chart only commenced on 7th April 1956. For anyone like Jeff who would like to see the extra no 1's there is my "Piece" on page 68 of "Hit Singles 16" plus on GOOGLE on MELODY MAKER TOP 30 about page 10 "Fortune City" have cribbed me work. I don't mind as it's good the info is spreading! ASM.

Dear Jeff Yes! many moons ago when Tony's first ever Top 20 book came out (The bright Green Copy) I wrote and corrected a few thing's (Gently) He was kind enough to credit me. I've always found it ironic that he had no trouble publishing the charts of 2/1/65, 31/12/66 & 2/1/71 where Guiness always used to miss em' ASM

Thanks ASM! It's probably me that's cribbed your work - it was originally cribbed from the book you mention (as well as Tony Jasper for the 50s) , but I updated it in August for Wild Thing and the non RM 50s charts having seen your piece in Guinness. I'll update it soon to give you credit! But i'm with you all the way - all this nonsense about the Who never having had a number 1 - of course they have!

Hi ASM. Can you tell me if any NME number 1s of the late 50s did not get to Number 1 in Disc or Melody Maker?

Hav'nt checked this page for a while - Jeff and I have continued our NME, MM , DISC 50's no 1's on the BIG TOTP Montage page fans! One small correction; earlier in this section I stated M.Maker Missed Charts over the Xmas/New year period in 1963, 67, 68 &69. They also missed one in 1962 as well. ASM
