I see no problem with the Tina Charles/Bay City Rollers positions
they make sense, Tina had entered the top 40 at 31 peaked at 31, then shot out completely the very next week
meanwhile, BCR already sliding fast 17, 28, 31 (no relation to the Tina's 31, then out of the charts)
also at NME towers, BCR slid from 7 to 29, then the very next week, Tina Charles was a new entry at 29.......

No, the book is wrong. Tina climbed into the Top 30 (there are TOTP shows which confirm this) - it was the BCRS who plummeted out of the chart as they were inclined to do in their latter years.

so how do you know this......
the BBC might have got the wrong act and still picture wrong.....
due to a BBC Junior's error......
(she was No.29 in NME the next week as a New Entry)

One show confirms it, which is an error of their own.

Early editions of the Guiness book of hit singles show Tina peaking at 28, but this has been changed to 31 in later editions (and appears as 31 in a couple of websites). I am therefore convinced that TOTP is CORRECT in showing the record getting to 28 and that when the Top 40 charts book was published an error was made, and all the other references have followed suit in keeping the error. I know we're only talking about 3 places, but back in those days "hit" meant Top 30 not Top 40, so it does make a difference!

Dear Jeff "Guinness" back in 1992 relased a book (As part of the40th anniversary chart celebration) which displayed every "Record Retailer" top 40 chart from 10th March 1960 up to 1992. Two drawbacks - first, though they published the Xmas 1968 chart -which Tony Jasper has always ommitted- sadly they ommitted themselves the charts of 2nd Jan 1965, 31st Dec 1966 and 2nd Jan 1971. I have since provided them with these charts. Secondly "Giunness" were, and are still restricted to only publishing a top 40. The "Official Chart co" won't give them the rights to publish top 50's. There was a second edition a few years later which at least added the 2/1/71 chart. The Tony Jasper book is where the mistakes are, basically "Record Mirror" were pretty shoddy in their chart pages, unlike NME and Melody Maker who were far more professional. ASM

but in this case we are talking 1976 ASM.
are there any documentation (non published forms)
which verify the top 30 for TOTP 20/05/76
and verify the Guinness books for that week.
as both sources differ very clearly.

I've just remembered that there are 2 other sources which I will check tonight when I get home - 1. The bible before Guinness which was ROCK FILE - fortunately their final 5th edition published in 1978 dealt with the Top 30 1967-77 (earlier editions were only concerned with the Top 20) 2. There was a book by Dafydd Rees called Star File which dealt with the Top 50 - I have this book which just dealt with 1976! So if both these give Tina Charles at 28 that'll settle it - stay tuned!!
PS I would very much like to see those 2 missing 1960s Top 40s - could those be posted here? I think that falls within the remit of missing episodes!

The only Sure way to check is to access old issues of Record Collector at Collingdales or at the Music Library. I'll try to see if I can downline those Three top 50's ASM

Dear Jeff I would'nt recommend either Rock File or Star File for accuracy. Both are full of mistakes EG giving "In The Summertime" 8 weeks at no1 and "I Hear You Knocking" 7 weeks on top. If you can get hold of an actual "Record Retailer" from 20 May 1976 hopefully the problem might be solved. ASM

The Chart Watch guys have access to old charts so they're usually pretty accurate.

Point taken about accuracy of Star & Rock files. However they both show Tina at 28, so that combined with the evidence also posted on the BBC TOTP2 board means as far as I'm concerned that beyond reasonable doubt Guiness has made an error and the song was a Top 30 hit.
