Yes but that Beatles example was a few years back now. Things have come on in leaps and bounds since the mid '90s. While i'm in two minds as to the ethics of colourising material that wasn't that way in the beginning, TOTP WAS in colour in 1970 though. However, as you say there is no reference copy (no matter how bad quality) to determine what the actual colours were, unlike Ambassadors Of Death (the episode of which they restored to full colour looks stunning, I have to say). Those TOTP t/rs would look fantastic Vidfired though!

That's a good point Laurence. I would have no objection to coulerising Top Of The Pops Eps which WERE originally in colour. It may sound daft to people my objecting to colouring those episodes which were shot in B/W but as an old movie buff i've seen the results of those procsses. Even as Laurence states the technology is better now, for me it's a bit more than that. ASM

Wehey! At last a clip from 26/2/70. Hope it's not another nine years before another from this show. Regarding colourisation; if there were colour copies of clips as with the 29/2/70 show then it would be easy. But with no template so to speak from this episode it may be quite a task. The BBC had problems with a "Dr Who" story "Ambassadors Of Death" where the Sony Umatic colour was too weak in places to give an accurrate guide. Personally i'm wary of colourised material "All You Need Is Love" is too pastel slanted for me, it resembles those chalk crayons that schools used to use. ASM "yes you can borrow my crayons but don't wear down the point" never did underestand that one the colour of the sets can be taken from survivng colour clips this would make identifying the other colours easier but it would have to be hand coloured or at least a few frames would as for the colours they could be as vibrant as you want i don't know why they always use such washed out pastels I supose its so that the picture underneath can still be seen. a bit of Dr Who and the Silurians was computer coloured to bridge missing data I think

dear Laurence. Is it possible the colour could be improved on the July 1972 show then? Incidentally, this now (Unless i'm wrong) is the only TOTP show remaining not to have a clip used on TOTP2. ASM

I have seen the July '72 edition at the NFT. It's not so much "colour" as "tint", therefore I think it would have to be re-coloured from scratch unless a way is devised of souping up the colour signal (which may not be beyond the realms of possibility - who knows?) At least the colour there is may offer some kind of reference to what the colours originally were.
It's a good edition though, particularly for The Move clip. Picture quality is fine though; if TOTP2 use a clip, it would be easiest to just take out the colour completely.

Hi Laurence,
Bearing in mind you've seen the edition, was it a complete recording i.e. from opening titles to closing credits or is some of it missing?
Regards,
Mark
