Dear Steve ASM here. I posted titles of both clips more than once on other parts of the forum, but I don't mind repeating. The Wings is "Mary had A little Lamb" TOTP with mock farmyard set. I gave FULL description to Keith Badman for his BEATLES book. Hurricane Smith is "Who Was It?" again TOTP . I played tape using monochrome set first. That way you can tell if a tape carries a pulse without trying to copy first (Try It!) And who pray do you think Mr Badman received the list of DISCO/TOTP clips from? I actually shelled out 90DM per tape buying each individual DISCO show in full. Legally I had to return it as it WASENT "Disco Pick Up's" but another compilation they sent by mistake. I have Informed the B.B.C and they are "Hopefully"! taking it up with ZDF. That's the honest truth, I swear to it! ASM While trawling through my notes on ZDF Disco i was reminded of this thread back in 2003. Did the clips of : Wings- Mary Had A Little Lamb (TOTP) and Hurricane Smith - Who Was It (TOTP)....ever get followed up?

Probably an old question but I still do wonder if ZDF hold complete TOTP broadcasts in their archive that haven't been returned to the BBC. The one I'm particularly interested in is the 4/2/71 edition of which Cliff Richard's Sunny Honey Girl clip had been used for Disco. This TOTP would be a major find as the album slot featured Elton John with Your Song + two tracks from his album Tumbleweed Connection.

I'm pretty certain ZDF do not hold complete editions of Top Of The Pops. As you can see from my avatar every now and again you can see the TOTP insert slate show up on Disco so I'm sure this is all they have.

Yes mike that is a very interesting question. Now considering that ZDF kept disco and other shows.they must have had the full editions to then take the clips from such as Gudbuy't jane when you can just see the dj for a split second before the song starts. has the full archive ever been fully investigated? will they let us? They also hold the full version of Pop Goes the sixties. Did they junk the editions they were given then.i doubt it considering the hiold lots of other shows complete?

No, generally they only bought TOTP inserts (as the existing slates confirm), not whole editions, as Mike pointed out. My own view though is that it's always possible that ZDF may have held the odd complete edition in their archive, although there is no evidence so far to suggest this. I'm sure they would say they didn't have anything of the sort if asked though (as most archives tend to do when asked if they hold any material from other broadcasters). An actual physical search by a respected third party would be the only way to tell!

Not necessarily, ZDF probably would of asked the BBC for specific performances, then the BBC would send just 'those' performances with the DJ introduction. But having said that would it be viable that the BBC would send ZDF an Ampex/Scotch 2" reel with just a couple of TOTP inserts As for Pop Goes the Sixties, I bet the BBC wiped their tape and acquired a copy from ZDF.

It's impossible to search the ZDF archives unless you work for a recognized company. This is something that somehow needs to be rectified.

But having said that would it be viable that the BBC would send ZDF an Ampex/Scotch 2" reel with just a couple of TOTP inserts Yes, that's probably what they did. As far as complete shows are concerned though, the BBC have in the past sent out actual master tapes to others to use (rather than dubs of - bad practice, yes ) so if there was a TOTP edition which contained several clips ZDF wanted to use, it's always conceivable that, for ease, they were just supplied with the master to take the performances off themselves (bearing in mind the BBC were not planning on keeping the show anyway). Again, that's just my theorising but it would not surprise me at all if the odd complete TOTP was found intact in ZDF's archives at some point!
