Presumably it was possible, although unlikely, in the days of the BBC average chart, if the papers all disagreed on the No 1 but agreed on the No 2, that that No 2 became the BBC's Number 1!

Never quite happened Jeff! Closest was on 31st August 1968 when "I've Gotta Get A Message To You" (Bee Gees) "Do It Again" (Beach Boys) and "This Guy's In Love With You" (Herb Alpert) Were joint no1. There has never been a situation (In the 60's) where a no 2 in all three or four charts was topped in each chart by a different no 1. It's actually nearly impossible. Incidentally IF the BBC had been utilising "Top Pop's" chart as well on 31/8/68 then The Bee Gees would have been sole no 1. Another bit of Data is that "Record Retailers" charts weren't incorporated in the calculations until 1st Jan 1966. The BBC and Derek Chinnery helped me here; plus if you access those old BBC W/A charts NO Beatles single could have entered straight at no1 (As they did) between Dec 1963 and Dec 1965. ASM

Very intersting. Last question - did Shirley Bassey's As I Love You get to No 1 in Disc and MM? Despite its long stay at the top in NME, the Platters kept it off Number 1 in RM.

Yes! Jeff. "As I Love You" Hit no 1 for One week only on 21st Feb 1959 in Melody Makers chart. It hit no 1 in Discs chart on 21st Feb as well, this time for a Three week stay at the top. Regards ASM

I assume that TOTP soundtrack was originally partnered by the vision. Whatever happened to that though, I don't know. Not sure about those other surviving TRs though; i'm not up on the technical side but maybe someone else in the know can fill us in (Steve Roberts maybe?). :)ok then, interesting though is that the whole show or just the acts a la 6/6/68? steve do you have any answers?

Jeff! I've replied with some more data on your own E.Mail. Sorry about the mix up but I didn,t spot your E.Mail on that site untill i had a real good trawl. Of all the chart toppers in the 60's not to be "Officially" credited as a no1 I would submit " 19th Nervous Breakdown" (Even unluckier than Please Please Me) 19th was no 1 in NME, MM, Disc for Three weeks and top in Pop Weekly's chart. Not only that it was calculated Three weeks no1 on "Pick Of The Pops" and on "Top Of The POPS" yet every Rolling Stones book i've ever read takes the easy way out by following "Guinness" No wonder Johnny Rogan is so angry about it. Finally - thiough this isen,t confirmed yet, i'm hoping Dave McAleer can include my feature on "Other no 1's of the 70's in "Guinness 17" as a companion to my 60's feature. eg did you know that "Killer Queen" hit no1 for Two weeks in another chart? Regards Alan S.
