BBC2 60th Anniversary

The schedule for BBC2 on 20th April has a 4 hour collection of 60 songs shown on the channel over its 60 year history. Probably largely things that have been shown before but there should be plenty of room for some obscurities from the vast collection of music programmes broadcast since 1964. Remarkable, I don't think such a marathon of clips has been shown on the BBC before. I'm hoping for Matthews Southern Comfort 'Woodstock' from 'Disco 2' to get featured, also The Kinks from 'Once More With Felix' and some not previously repeated clips from 'Rock Goes To College' (please revive!!!) Sounds like a very exciting watch.

Sounds interesting but let's hope this won't include those performances which are rolled out time and time again, good though they are: the Kinks - "You Really Got Me" (from Beat Room), Bowie - "Queen Bitch" (OGWT), New York Dolls - "Jet Boy" (OGWT), Joni Mitchell - "Big Yellow Taxi" (In Concert), etc., etc.

There was a marathon clips programme fronted by John Peel in the Eighties about the history of pop videos which went from 1930’S video jukeboxes to 1980's MTV era

The video special; Yes I remember it well! We recorded it at the time. Was Peel and John Walters. From memory it ended with them both in their nightgowns. Im sure the Ashes To Ashes video featured in the end credit sequence.

Thanks Peter! That was clearly a marathon show. Aside from the presenters I clearly remember Godley and Creme being interviewed because the 'Cry' video was a big "how did they do that"? at the time.

I've never seen that compilation but it's good that Jeff Buckley featured. I think of all my wish for clips that will be the one that will get shown on Saturday and of course there's also Tim. However if they included him it probably wouldn't be 'Morning Glory' from 'Late Night Line-Up' in April '68 as the end credits run over the top of it.

I remember taping a few excerpts at the time (VHS tapes were expensive!), including the Rolling Stones/Eric Burdon and The Animals/Mike Nesmith videos.

I had just bought my first VHS recorder and blank tape when the video special 'Video Jukebox' was broadcast. Unfortunately I still had the mentality of my audio cassette recording days to focus on editing out most of the items between the video clips. I still have an hour of a half of clunkily edited fragments of this programme with only a small part of the dialogue between Peel and Walters and an item about Godley and Creme mentioned earlier. I put a few seconds from this recording on my YT channel, albeit only some MTV trailers, blink and you'll miss it! www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6evpokIGNE

Recorded the whole thing and still have it! (hence the list that Peter C included) recorded on old-style heavy VHS tapes. Probably still play fine. Will find out next year though as I intend to record my 400 off-airs (1982-2005) and about 40 store bought pre-recorded tapes to a PC using an S-VHS player.
