It was a steaming pile of horse sh*te with about 5 nice daffodils sticking out of the top of the dung. I watched it all in 17 minutes. Can I just say that NOT EVEN JOHN LENNON was featured. I can accept all the other multi-million selling life changing artists that were snubbed, but the GREATEST?? The BBC should NOT be the curators of their archive. They left Gerry Rafferty out of their Scottish music special recently and now this horror show. Disgraceful.

That was a complete waste of time! Way too many clips from Jools Hollands ‘later’ and ‘hootenanny’ plus ‘Glastonbury’ The whole thing was like a radio 2 playlist..

I agree completely with Thomas and Chris.. it was an appalling waste of time and opportunity, and hardly representative of 60 years of music in any way. Epic fail, as common parlance has it.

Anyone remember the ‘eighties’ compilation programme on 31/12/89? That was a great compilation..

Yes I'm in agreement with everyone so far. A profoundly wasted opportunity. There were some moments, there had to be in a 60 song collection; An Ella Fitzgerald appearance had to be included and thankfully was, ditto Van Morrison in '74, Tracy Chapman at the Mandella concert was a delightful surprise for me as was Kylie Minogue's best single. But. There were 2 clips from the 1960s. TWO! The absence of anything from 'Colour Me Pop' the finest representation of the 2 years when BBC2 was the only channel offering a colour service was not only hugely disappointing it was plain daft. Nothing also from 'Rock Goes To College', maybe the finest live concert series on British TV and where on earth was The Clash in this collection?? Agree totally with Thomas that Lennon in '75 should've been an absolute given. The text and titles was bearable but made errors in 2 of the best clips. 'Kate At The BBC'? No it was called 'Kate' actually. And Jeff Buckley described as being in his only British TV appearance said the show who relied heavily on Glastonbury clips. No he also appeared at Glastonbury on Channel 4. The Stone Roses mess up on 'The Late Show' instead of on 'Snub TV' (again no appearance). Ended fair enough with McCartney and 'Get Back' Yes BBC2, please do.

Very good points you make, especially with regard to 'Colour Me Pop' and 'Rock Goes To College'. On the upside at least we got the Jeff Buckley performance of "Grace" which was superb! There was far too much of Jools Holland in evidence on this four-hour show though.. was he involved in the programme-making I wonder?

Sadly a lot of the ‘…. At the BBC’ shows rely heavily on the jools Holland shows… I’ve nothing against jools,I actually really enjoy them but it seems they use them to ‘pad out ‘ compilation shows. I actually assumed they would use a lot of clips from sounds of the 60’s/70’s

For me probably the saddest thing was that they missed the huge opportunity to show one thing that survives from 'Disco 2'. 'Woodstock', No.1 in an era of true big sellers would've fitted in perfectly. Maybe the best thing would've to have a two parter; Pt.1; smasheroonies which they featured as and when and good on the channel for that. Then pt.2 with songs that are deeper, more interesting. 30 of each. To me that would've been a very BBC2 attitude; Watch this, you might love it and learn something new or you might be bored and switch over and watch something else. You've had Dolly Parton '9 to 5' at Glastonbury (which I was at and loved), now here's The Moody Blues 'The Actor' in colour in 1968. It was just the populism of it that disappointed me which wasn't the BBC2 I grew up with and loved.

After decades of believing everything started with The Beatles, the BBC have finally changed their stance: they now believe everything started with David Bowie!

Yes indeed and that skewed view diminishes pop in general and also his. Wouldn't it be great for BBC2 to have a mini series of music clips from across their music archive after the big names thing on Saturday. And revive 'Rock Goes To College'. With another title.

Great idea! How about 'Rock Went To College'?
