Hi all — AFAIK, the BBC never published “Tenth Planet” as one of their “photonovels” online, so I was wondering what’s the highest-quality place they’ve been publicly released?

Were they ever in the Dr Who magazine, certainly on the dvd.

They were printed in Doctor Who Magazine issue 207 in 1993. They printed the full set of snaps but they’re quite small.
In 2013 the majority were printed in the DWM Special Edition which contained telesnaps for First Doctor stories. For all the episodes, including The Tenth Planet 4 they used most but not all of the snaps. The images are not in the best quality.
The telesnap reconstruction on the VHS and later DVD uses a number of the telesnaps but not all of them. For example they don’t use any of the close ups of the Cybermen from Episode 4 opting for screenshots from Episode 2. Those they do use in the recon are the best quality versions out there that I know of.
I would very much like to see a full set in as good quality as is possible!

The First Doctor Handbook (Howe-Stammers-Walker: 1994: pg 137) says that the master tape of episode 4 was sent to Junior Points of view to use extracts on that weeks show. Does anybody happen to know what was discussed, as the word 'extracts' suggests that it was not just the regeneration clip that was discussed. A general google search didnt garner much information whether there were transcripts or off-air audios. Many thanks.

The letters that were read out on Junior Points of View were covered in Andrew Pixley's feature, Out of the Mouths of Babes in DWM 269 and 270. In this case, the 4th November edition read out three comments in general favour of the Cybermen (and the boredom of seeing Daleks). A clip from Episode 4 was shown, but it was indeed just the regeneration scene. |

I'm not certain but I'm fairly sure the telesnap recon is a special feature on the dvd. But you are correct there was a vhs released in a special white cyberman tin along with attack of the cybermen. An odd pair to stick together but it was late un the range and I think the last two the be released. The previous year they did the same thing with the daleks containing planet and revelation and then the year after did a master one with colony in spade and the time monster. I remember getting them for consecutive Christmases

I haven't watched it for some years but I remember the telesnap recon of Tenth Planet 4 being extremely good example. Wasn't there some kind of gimmick or framing device employed to 'explain' the change of ratio from full screen to something slightly smaller, to lend the telesnaps greater clarity? I seem to recall Ice Warriors 2 & 3 presented on a futuristic wristwatch found in the snow, or something like that.

I think they were shown against the backdrop of a radar tracking screen, if I recall correctly. There were also other effects used such as flicker on the monitor as a Cyberman addresses the base. It was an excellent recon which I think was also included on the DVD. |

Can confirm there is a frame around the tele snaps and 8mm clips that resemble some of the scanners. They change color a few times and occasionally are animated. The snaps/clips probably take up about 2/3rds of the screen with the frame being larger on bottom than on top. I'd send a picture but this forum doesn't appear to allow that
